Thecentralprocessingunit（CPU）istheheartofthecomputersystem.Itisresponsibleforperformingallarithmeticoperationsandlogicdecisionsinitiatedbytheprogram.Inadditiontoarithmeticandlogicfunctions,theCPUcontrolsoverallsystemoperation.TherearetwomainsectionsfoundintheCPUofatypicalpersonalcomputersystem:

thearithmetic-logicsectionandthecontrolsection.Butthesetwosectionsarenotuniquetopersonalcomputer.TheyarefoundinCPUsofallsizes.

EveryprocessorcomeswithauniquesetofoperationssuchasADD,STORE,orLOADthatrepresenttheprocessor’sinstructionset.Computerdesignersarefondofcallingtheircomputermachines,sotheinstructionsetissometimesreferredtoasmachineinstructionandthebinarylanguageinwhichtheyarewritteniscalledmachinelanguage.

Thememoryunitofthecomputerisusedtostoreinformationsuchasnumbers,names,andaddresses.By“store”,wemeanthatmemoryhastheabilitytoholdthisinformationforprocessingorforoutputtingforlatertime.Theprogramsthatdefinehowthecomputeristoprocessdataalsoresideinmemory.

Incomputersystem,memoryisdividedintotwodifferentsections,knownasmainstorageandauxiliarystorage.Theyarealsosometimescalledinternalmemoryandexternalmemoryrespectively.Externalmemoryisusedforlongtermstorageofinformationthatisnotinuse.Forinstance,itholdsprograms,filesofdata,andfilesofinformation.Inmostcomputers,thispartofmemoryemploysstorageonmagneticmediasuchasmagnetictapes,magneticdisks,andmagneticdrums.Thisisbecausetheyhavetheabilitytostorelargeamountofdata.Internalmemoryisasmallersegmentofmemoryusedtotemporarystorageofprograms,data,andinformation.Forinstance,whenaprogramistobeexecuted,itsinstructionsarefirstbroughtfromexternalmemoryintointernalmemorytogetherwiththefilesofdataandinformationthatitwillaffect.Afterthis,theprogramisexecutedanditsfilesupdatedwhiletheyareheldininternalmemory.Whentheprocessingdefinedbytheprogramiscompleted,theupdatedfilesarereturnedtoexternalmemory.Heretheprogramandfilesareretainedforuseatlatertime.
