I especially like meeting different clients every day is different, in fact. I work 60 hours a week and sometimes I get ve

2、ry stressed, but most of the time I feel very positive about my job. 2 Im a fitness instructor. I run fitness classes at gyms and leisure clubs but I have some private clients too. I plan exercise programmes for them and go to their homes to help them get fit. I like this job a lot because I can org

3、anize my own time. And its very rewarding to see people get fit and healthy. Its more satisfying than my old job- I used to work in an office. I hated that. 3 Im an accountant. I specialize in bankruptcy - so I spend all my time dealing with companies that have gone out of business. My job is pretty

4、 varied. I like the flexibility - in my company, you can start work when you want and leave when you want, as long as youre there during the core hours, from ten to three every day. Thats a real bonus for a working mother. Its much more flexible than some of the larger accountancy firms. And its wel

5、l-paid so Im very lucky, really. 4 Im a civil servant. I work in regional government. Im in a department with ten other people. Our job is to attract investment into the area. In the past five years, weve persuaded more than 20 overseas companies to set up operations here. I Love the teamwork - Im a

11、with my team. We go out together a lot - for a meal or a drink after work. 2. Motivation 2.11 Im a call centre manager in the financial services industry. I believe its important, to let people work without constant supervision-you have to let them use their initiative; otherwise, they feel theyre b

12、eing treated like children. Of course, there are procedures to follow but we like to give employees as much flexibility as possible within those procedures.2 Im a section manager in an insurance company. We do the paperwork relating to insurance claims. The employees must be here by 8 a.m. and they

13、cant leave before 5 p.m. I want to see what theyre doing the whole time. That way I can be sure theyre doing the work were paying them to do. 3 Im a senior manger in an oil company. I encourage younger managers in my department to use their initiative. They respond to this well - it motivates them a

14、nd you can see their work improving. Its also a good way to identify potential future managers among them - the ones who are going to reach the top of the organization in the future.4 I work in the retail industry for a large chain of department stores. Im in charge of 20 sales assistants. All theyr

15、e interested in is getting to the weekend, and doing as little as possible. I have to keep an eye on them the whole time. We dont allow any sort of initiative - it just leads to problems when people start ignoring the established procedures. 2.21 Ive worked in the oil industry since I graduated. I l

16、ike the way they do things in this company. Were encouraged to use our initiative - to think for ourselves and solve problems. We get our own projects to look after - I think they realize that people with MBAs need that kind of independence. And were judged on results, not by the amount of time we s

17、pend on the job. 2 The managers breathing down my neck all the time! He walks around the different departments, checking the on the sales people-you never know when he is going to appear. The only thing hes interested in is reaching his sale target. We cant do anything without asking him first. 3 In

18、 this organization, like in all insurance companies, you just follow established procedure. Decisions are imposed from above - theres no consultation. And dont ever dream about working from home, not even one day a week! That would never be allowed - they want to see what youre doing the whole time.

19、 4 Ive worked in other places where they measure your work very precisely - they dont want you to spend more than three minutes on each call. But here theres more flexibility, and you can spend as much time as you want with each customer, within reason, of course. As a team Leader, I get a lot of re

20、sponsibility, which I like and I get a lot of satisfaction from my work. I think that motivates people. And valued employees make for valued customers! 2.3Michael: Would you like coffee or tea? 21、nne: I was born in Germany, in Freiburg, in the south of Germany. Michael: Really? I thought you were American. Susanne: Well, I was brought up in the States. My father worked there. Michael: Oh, that explains the accent! Where did you live? Susanne: We moved around, but mostly we lived on the East

22、Coast. Michael: Did you go to university there?Susanne: No, I studied in London. And Ive been in England since I graduated. Michael: Do you miss your family? Susanne: Well, my sister is in England, too, and my parents come over to visit sometimes. Michael: Do you get back to the States much? Susanne

23、: Once or twice a year. In my first job after graduation, I used to travel a lot so I saw my parents more often.Michael: What were you doing?Susanne: I was a trainee buyer for a fashion house in London. Michael: That sounds fun! Susanne: It was, but after a couple of years, I decided the fashion bus

24、iness wasnt for me.Michael: Why was that?Susanne: Oh, I dont know. The fashion business is veryMichael: I guess its very competitive? Lots of beautiful people?Susanne: Thats right. Its all about image, as you would expect.Michael: So how exactly did you end up in this line of business?Susanne: Well,

25、 thats a long story.2.4For us, the family is the most important element in our lives. I used to work for a local investment banking company, Asian Finance. It was a Singaporean company, run by a local family - the father and two sons. At Asian Finance, family ties were very important. Many of the pe

26、ople who worked there were related to each other. Now I work for Finvest, an international finance company. The head office is in France and some of the managers are from there, but there are also some Americans, one or two other Europeans, and some from other parts of Asia as well. So family doesnt

27、 count for much here. The Americans tell me that the company is very French, but I cant really tell. I have some friends who work for American multinationals and they are very different, thats true. Finvest is quite a traditional company, maybe thats a European thing, I dont know. It certainly has i

28、ts own, culture - people dress very formally and theres a lot of handshaking!2.5 As I was saying, everybody dresses very formally - thats true for the men and the women. And I notice that the French managers tend to shake hands or even, kiss when they meet each other. Its a well established business

29、 - its been going for generations. There are pictures on the walls of some of the founders and key people over the years. I notice the formality in letters and reports - the expressions they use are much more formal than Im used to and generally when you write, even emails, you need to be careful wh

30、at you say. 3 Incentives3.1A: . So what exactly are the incentives if I exceed my performance target? B: If you reach 110 per cent of your target for the year, youll get a performance bonus of 1000. But you wont get a bonus unless you reach the target. A: What will the benefits package contain if I
