1.1.1.TheBostonTeaParty

EventsLeadingtotheTeaParty

TheBritishEastIndiaCompanyhadcontrolledallteatradingbetweenIndiaandtheBritishcolonies.Asaresultoftheteatax,thecoloniesrefusedtobuytheBritishtea.Instead,theysmuggledteainfromHolland.ThislefttheBritishEastIndiaCompanywithwarehousesfullofunsoldtea,andthecompanywasindangerofgoingoutofbusiness.

TheBritishgovernmentwasdeterminedtopreventtheBritishEastIndiaCompanyfromgoingoutofbusiness.Itwasgoingtoforcethecoloniststobuytheirtea.InMay1773,PrimeMinisterNorthandtheBritishparliamentpassedtheTeaAct.TheTeaActallowedtheBritishEastIndiaCompanytosellteadirectlytothecolonists,bypassing(避开)thecolonialwholesalemerchants.ThisallowedthecompanytoselltheirteacheaperthanthecolonialmerchantswhoweresellingsmuggledteafromHolland.

Thisactrevivedthecolonialissueoftaxationwithoutrepresentation.ThecoloniesonceagaindemandedthattheBritishgovernmentremovethetaxontea.Inaddition,thedockworkersbeganrefusingtounloadtheteafromships.

TheGovernorofMassachusettsdemandedthattheteabeunloaded.Healsodemandedthatthepeoplepaythetaxesanddutyontea.

The"BostonTeaParty"

OntheeveningofDecember16,1773,agroupofmencallingthemselvesthe"SonsofLiberty"wenttotheBostonHarbor.ThemenweredressedasMohawkIndians.TheyboardedthreeBritishships,theBeaver,theEleanorandtheDartmouth,anddumpedforty-fivetonsofteaintotheBostonHarbor.

1.1.2.TheWarofIndependence

AftertheFrenchandIndianWarthatoccurredbetween1754-1763,theBritishgovernmentbeganrequiringthecoloniestopayhighertaxes.Overtime,protestsandconflictledtoatighteningofcontrolbytheMotherCountry.BeginningwiththefightingatLexingtonandConcordinApril1775,openwarfarebrokeout.ThestrugglebywhichtheThirteenColoniesontheAtlanticseaboardofNorthAmericawonindependencefromGreatBritainandbecametheUnitedStates.ItisalsocalledtheAmericanWarofIndependence.The"shotheardroundtheworld"firedatLexingtononApril19,1775beganthewarforAmericanIndependence.ItendedeightandahalfyearslaterSeptember3,1783withtheTreatyofParis.ThetermusedforthecoloniesofBritishNorthAmericathatjoinedtogetherintheAmericanRevolutionagainstthemothercountry,adoptedtheDeclarationofIndependencein1776,andbecametheUnitedStates.TheywereNewHampshire,Massachusetts,RhodeIsland,Connecticut,NewYork,NewJersey,Pennsylvania,Delaware,Maryland,Virginia,NorthCarolina,SouthCarolina,andGeorgia.TheyarealsocalledtheThirteenOriginalStates.
