AlliterationTherepetitionofthesameconsonantsoundsinasequenceofwords,usuallyatthebeginningofawordorstressedsyllable:

"descendingdewdrops";"lusciouslemons."Alliterationisbasedonthesoundsofletters,ratherthanthespellingofwords;forexample,"keen"and"car"alliterate,but"car"and"cite"donot.Usedsparingly,alliterationcanintensifyideasbyemphasizingkeywords,butwhenusedtooself-consciously,itcanbedistracting,evenridiculous,ratherthaneffective.Seealsoassonance,consonance.

AllusionAbriefreferencetoaperson,place,thing,event,orideainhistoryorliterature.Allusionsconjureupbiblicalauthority,scenesfromShakespeare’splays,historicfigures,wars,greatlovestories,andanythingelsethatmightenrichanauthor’swork.Allusionsimplyreadingandculturalexperiencessharedbythewriterandreader,functioningasakindofshorthandwherebytherecallingofsomethingoutsidetheworksuppliesanemotionalorintellectualcontext,suchasapoemaboutcurrentracialstrugglescallingupthememoryofAbrahamLincoln.
