Duringthattime,hestayedonthepath.Hesawpeoplesearchingforhimbutdeliberatelyhidfromthem,afraidsomeonemight“steal”him.Eventually,theunfortunategameofhide-and-seekendedandhewasfound.AccordingtotheCanadaSafetyCouncil,thisalarmingincidentshowshowunwiseitistoinstill(灌输)afearofstrangersinchildren.The“strangerdanger”messagecanpreventchildrenfromdevelopingthesocialskillsandjudgmentneededtodealeffectivelywithreal-lifesituations.Inadifficultsituation,astrangercouldbetheirlifelinetosafety.

Tohaveachildgomissingisaparent’sworstnightmare.Thethreatofabductionbyastrangerisminimalwhencomparedwithotherpossiblereasonsforadisappearance.In2004,therewere67,266missing-childrencasesinCanada.Only31involvedabduction;inmostofthosecasestheabductorwasarelative,friend,orpersonknowntothefamily.Therewere671casesof

childrenwanderingoff,and332casesofabductionsbyaparent.Almost80percentofallcaseswererunaways.Thesestatisticscastdoubtontheideathatchildrenshouldnevertalktostrangers.
