TheGreatGatsbywasamasterpieceamongFitzgerald’sworks.Itwasnotonlyaworkwithastrongautobiographicalfeature,butalsoamasterworkwhichdescribeddreamandhopevividlyinthehistoryofworldliterature.Firstpublishedin1925,TheGreatGatsbymetwithexcellentreviews,withT.S.Eliotbeingamongthefirsttocommentonthebook,callingitthefirststepthatAmericanfictionhastakensinceHenryJames’.AlmosteveryAmericanwriterhastouchedonthethemeofAmericandream,butasfarasthebreadthanddepth,nooneisequaltoF.S.Fitzgerald.TheGreatGatsbyisthemodelofAmericandreaminthehistoryofAmericanliterature.Inthenovel,FitzgeraldregardedGatsbyasaprojectionofhisself-image,andheadornedandpolisheditcarefully,tryingtomakethehero’simageandhisownunityperfectly,andplayedadirgeofthedisillusionmentofAmericandream.Once,aresearcherpointedout,“Fitzgerald’ssocialroleandtheimageinhisnovelhadbeencompletelymergedtogether.”1ItseemstothereaderthatMr.FitzgeraldisaGatsbyintherealworld.

I.FitzgeraldandTheGreatGatsby

Fitzgerald,afamousAmericanwriter,wasoneofthemostimportantrepresentativesof"jazzage".HemadegoodfordeficiencybyvirtueofhisliterarytalentandthusformedhisuniquewritingstyleamongthenovelistsinmodernAmerican.In1920,FitzgeraldpublishedthenovelTheSideofParadise,whichmadehimrecognizedbygreatcriticsandwasfamousinAmericanliterature.In1925TheGreatGatsby’spublicationestablishedhisplaceinthehistoryofmodernAmericanliterature.Hebecameaspokesmanofthe“jazzage”inthe20sandoneoftherepresentativewritersofthe“lostgeneration”.F.ScottFitzgeraldwasbestknownforhisnovelsandshortstorieswhichchronicledtheexcessesofAmerica'sJazzAgeduringthe1920s.HewasborninSt.Paul,wherehisfamilywasconsideredsociallyprominentandrelativelypoor.FitzgeraldwasbothavictimandakeenonlookeroftheextravagantgaudyoftheJazzAge.HisfictionalworldinwhichheshowedaparticularinterestintheupperclasswasthebestembodimentofthespiritoftheAmericansociety.TheGreatGatsbywasamaterialsuccessandestablishedhisreputationasoneofthepromisingnovelistsinthecirclesofliterature.Itforesawthedoomandfailureofthepost-warboomyearsorthe“roaringtwenties”inthemidstofwhichhelived.Thestorywasapictureoftheprohibitioneraandamasterpiecerelatedwithironyandpathostolegendryofthe“Americandream”.

Inthebook,Gatsbywasasonoffarmers.Hewasordinarybuthardworking.Whenhewasinthearmy,hemetandlovedarichandbeautifulgirl,whosenamewasDaisy.AftertheoutbreakofWorldWarI,Gatsbyhadtoserveonthefront,whileDaisymarriedTombecauseofhervanity,superficialdesireformoney.Someyearslater,GatsbystilllovedDaisyandhetriedtowinbackhissweetheartbythemeansofmoney.Hedidmanythingstoremindheroftheirpastlovingaffairs,sothattheycouldbetogetheragain.Oneday,Daisydroveacarandkilledherhusband’sloverbyaccident.Later,sheandherhusbandplantedthismurdercaseonpoorGatsby,indirectlylettinghimdieunderthegun.Tothereader’sanger,theviciouscouplecontinuedtoenjoytheirrichandcomfortablelife,completelyforgettingGatsby.ThecolorfuldreamsGatsbymadeeveryefforttocreate,wasswallowedupbythecruelandmessyworld,andallofthiswasjustlikeapieceofdirgecirclingaroundintheskyoftheJazzAge.

II.TheResemblancesBetweenFitzgeraldandGatsby

OnSeptember24th,1896,FrancisScottKeyFitzgeraldwasborninst.Paul,Minnesota.HewasnamedafterhisancestorFrancisScottKey,theauthorofTheStar-SpangledBanner.FitzgeraldwasraisedandgrewupinSt.Paul,Minnesota.Intelligentchildashewas,hedidpoorlyinschoolandwassenttoaNewJerseyboardingschoolin1911.Inspiteofbeinganordinarystudentthere,hewasadmittedtoPrincetonin1913.Itwastheacademictroublesthatplaguedhimthroughouthistimeatcollege,sohenevergraduated.Instead,hewasenlistedinthearmyin1917,asWorldWarIwasclosedtobeterminated.

Fitzgeraldbecameasecondlieutenantinthearmy,andhewasstationedatCampSheridan,inMontgomery,Alabama.Therehegotacquaintanceandfellinlovewithawildseventeen-year-oldbeautifulgirlwhosenamewasZeldaSayre.Thelaterfinallyagreedtomarryhim,butheroverwhelmingdesiresforwealth,fun,andleisureledherpostponetheirweddinguntilhecouldmakeafortune.In1920,withthepublicationofTheSideofParadise,Fitzgeraldbecameasensationintheliteraryworld,earningahotfameandenoughmoneytoconvinceZeldatomarryhim.Aftertheygotmarried,ZeldasufferedanervousbreakdownandFitzgeraldbattledalcoholism,whichhamperedhiswriting.HepublishedTenderIstheNightin1934,andsoldshortstoriestoTheSaturdayEveningPosttosupporthislavishlifestyle.In1937,heleftforHollywoodtowritescreenplays,andin1940,whileworkingonhisnovelTheLoveoftheLastTycoon,diedofaheartattackattheageofforty-four.

ManyoftheseeventshappenedinFitzgerald’searlylifewerere-existedinhismostfamousnovel,TheGreatGatsby,whichwaspublishedin1925.LikeFitzgerald,JayGatsbywasasensitiveyoungmanwhoidolizedwealthandluxuryandwhofellinlovewithabeautifulyoungwomanwhilestationedatamilitarycampintheSouth.Havingbecomeacelebrity,Fitzgeraldfellintoawild,recklesslife-styleofpartiesanddecadence,whiledesperatelytryingtopleaseZeldabywritingtoearnmoney.Similarly,Gatsbyamassedagreatdealofwealthatarelativelyyoungage,anddevotedhimselftoacquiringpossessionsandthrowingpartiesthathebelievedwillenablehimtowinDaisy’slove.
