BornintoawealthyJiangyinfamily,Xubecameinterestedinbooksaboutdifferentplacesatanearlyage.Whenhewas18,however,Xu'sfatherdied.Henowwasresponsibleforthefamilyfarmandtakingcareofhis60-year-oldmotherastraditionrequired.Buthismotherrefusedtokeephimathome.SheagreedthatXucouldtravelforthreemonthseveryyear,whentherewaslessfarmwork.Soattheageoftwentyandwithhismother'ssupport,Xusetoffforthefirsttime.Thenhetravelledforthenext30years.

Duringhistravel,hecarefullystudiedthelandshepassedthroughandrecordedhisexperiencesinadiary.Thisdiary,whichoncehadover500,000words,wouldeventuallybecomeTheTravelNotesofXuXiake.Althoughrich,Xuavoidedcomfortabletravel,preferringtogoalmosteverywhereonfoot.Thiswayhecouldresearchtheenvironmentindetailandgetatruepictureofthenaturalworld.

“PotteryusedtoplayanimportantroleinthedailylivesofChinesepeople.”schoolheadMaGuoxintoldthereporter.“Bypotterypainting,thestudentscanimprovethemselvesinmanyways.Theycanbetterunderstandthehistoryofthepottery,puttheircreativityintothepotteryandshowtheloveforlifeandbeauty.”

Studentsturnedthepotteryintodifferentworksofart.Theywereallencouragedtopaintpicturesonthepottery,eventhoughsomestudentsdidn'tknowhowtopaint.WangZixuan,astudentfromGradeEight,withlittleknowledgeofpainting,paintedabeautifulnightsceneryonapieceofpottery.Itwassonicethatmanystudentslovedit.

Almosteveryclassroomhascoloredpiecesofpottery.Theyareeitherusedasflowerpotsorpencontainers(笔筒).Theschoolhasalsosetupseveralartcornerstoshowthepottery.Forexample,thestudentshaveputsomepotteryonbookcasesoutsideofalecturehall(报告厅).Ithasbecomeanenjoyableplaceforstudentstorestandread.
