IspenttheopeningdayofschoolthisyearatDeMathaCatholicHighSchoolinmuchthesamewayIspentthefirstdayofclasses130yearsago;IsatinDr.CharlesE.Offutt’sBritishliteratureclass,listeningtohim2whathisseniorswouldlearnandgetthemexcitedaboutthejourneytheywould3.I’mtheprincipal(校长)oftheschoolnow,butforafewminutesIwasbackin1975,4whatthefutureheld.
IhavebeenlearningfromDr.Offuttfor30ofthe51yearshehasbeenteachingatDeMatha.Henotonlytaughtmetothink,he5me,asmuchbyexampleas6,thatitwasmymoraldutytodosoandtoserve7.
Neitherofuscouldknowhowour8woulddevelopovertheyears.WhenIfirstcamebacktoDeMathatoteachEnglish,IworkedforDr.Offutt,thethendepartmentchair.Afterseveralyears,Iwas9departmentchair,andourrelationshipchanged10.Ithoughtthatitmightbe11chairingthedepartment,sinceallofmyformerEnglishteacherswerestillthere,butDr.Offutt12methroughout.Heknewwhentogiveme13aboutcurriculum,textsandpersonnel,andwhentoletmedesignmyowncourse.
In1997,IneededhisadviceaboutleavingDeMathatobecomeprincipalatanotherschool.IfhehadaskedmetostayatDeMatha,Imighthave.14,heencouragedmetoseizethenew15.
Fiveyearsago,Ibecamethe16ofDeMatha.Onceagain,Dr.Offuttwasthereforme,lettingmeknowthatIcould17onhimasItriedtofillsuchbigshoes.I’velearnedfromhimthatgreatteachershavea(n)18wealthoflessonstoteach.19hisstudentsdon’tknowityet,Iknowhow20theyare;I’mstilloneofthem.

IjoinedtheCultureClubasaSpecialEventDirector.I8agroupofsixstudentsinorganizingvariousactivities.IwasthemostadvancedESLstudentamongthegroup,soIconsideredmyselfthemostcapable.ButIquicklylearnedmy9.Whilepreparingforourfirstpresentation,Iwas10withmyteammembersandoftenrejectedtheir11.Iperformedmostoftheirtasksmyself,allowingthemto12meonlywithsmalldetails.Asaresult,thepresentationwasnotverysuccessful.Thesetback13me,andIspokeofittotheclub’sdirector.Sherespondedthatshe14myabilitytosucceedinthefuture.Thiscommentfilledmewith15,forIrealizedthatIhadnevertrustedmyownteammembers.16theywereweakinEnglish,theyhadmanyvaluabletalents.Iimmediately17mypolicy,allowingmyteammemberstochoosethetaskstheydesiredandtocompletethemontheirown.Forourprogram,wehadmanymeetings,whichgave18tomanygoodideas.Mostimportantly,theatmosphereamongusimproveddramatically.Wewere19andeagertodevotetimetotheprogram,andIlearnedwhattrueleadershipis.

Icouldn’tbelievemyearswhenIheardmynamecalledfortheleadingroleinourhighschoolplay.Mrs.Dermitt,mydramateacher,hadbeenlookingforsomeonetoplayanenergeticboyinacomedy.Luckilyforme,shethoughtthatIcouldhandlethe1.
ThatafternoonmyfriendKevinandItalked2abouttheplay.AlthoughKevinhadn’tbeen3forapartonstage,hisjobwiththesetcrewwasimportanttothesuccessoftheplay.ItoldhimIwasalittle4becauseIhadalotoflinestomemorize.

Threedaysbeforethe9night,everythingwasreadyfortheperformance.ButwhenIwokeup10afev
