OnSeptember16,1910,inherhomemadeflyer,inHempsteadPlains,NewYork,BessicaRaichebecamethefirstU.S.womanaccreditedbytheAeronauticalSocietyofAmericaforasoloflight.

Bessica,beinglighterinweightthanherhusband,hadbeenchosentobethefirsttoattemptaflight.Thatday,shemadefiveflights.Thelastflightcoveredapproximatelyonemile.October13,1910,Bessicawasawardedadiamond-studdedgoldmedalwiththeinscription"FirstWomanAviatorinAmerica"byHudsonMaxim.

BessicaandFrancoisRaichewentontobuildtwomoreairplanes. Theywereinnovators(创新者)intheuseoflighterweightmaterialsinaircraftconstruction.By1920thefamilylivedinNewportBeach,California.Bessicaturnedherattentiontohermedicalcareerasaphysician.Notonlywassheoneofthefirstfemaleaviators,shewasalsooneofthefirstwomenspecialistsinobstetricsandgynecologyintheUnitedStates.
