3.IgrewupinLondoninthe1970sand1980s,inacountrythatwasstrugglingtocraftapostcolonialidentityforitself,acountrythatwas,inmanyways,stillreelingfromthecollapseofpoweritsufferedinthepost-WorldWarIIyears.Notsurprisingly,therewasastronganti-Americanflavortomuchofthepolitics,thehumor,theculturalchitchatoftheperiod;afterall,AmericahaddramaticallyusurpedBritanniaontheworldstage,andwhoamongusdoesntharborsomeresentmentsatbeingshuntedontothesidelinesbyanewsuperstar?

4.Today,however,whenItalkwithfriendsandrelativesinLondon,whenIvisitEurope,theantiAmericanismismorethanjustsardonicasides,ruefulMontyPython-stylejibes,andhaughtyintimationsofsuperiority.Todaysomethingmuchmorevisceralisintheair.IgotomyoldhomeandIgetthedistinctimpressionthat,asDrabbleputit,peoplereallyloatheAmericasomewheredeep,deepintheirgut.

7.Iftrue,thatsuggeststhat,whiletoallappearancesAmericasalliescontinuetocraftpoliciesinlinewiththewishesofWashington,underneaththesurfaceanewdynamicmaywellbeemerging,onenottoodissimilartotheSovietUnionsrelationswithitsreluctantsatellitestatesinEasternEuropeduringthecoldwar.Americasfriendsmaybequiescentinpublic,deeplyreluctanttotoethelineinprivate.DrabblementionedtheIraqwarasherprimarycasusbelliwiththeUnitedStates.

8.Inmanyways,theIraqwarismerelyapretextforadeeperdiscontentwithhowAmericahasseemedtofashionanewglobalsociety,aneweconomic,military,andpoliticalorderinthedecadeandahalfsincetheendofthecoldwar.Americamayonlyberidingthecrestofawaveofmodernizationthat,inalllikelihood,wouldhaveemergedwithoutitsguidinghand.ButaddtothemixadiscontentwiththevastwealthandpowerthatAmericahasamassedinthepastcenturyandadeepsenseofuneasewiththewaysinwhichasecular,market-drivenworlddivviesupwealthandinfluenceamongpeopleandnations,andyouhavealltheingredientsforanastybacklashagainstAmerica.

9.IntheyearssinceIstoodonmyrooftopinBrooklynwatchingtheWorldTradeCentertowersbumsoapocalyptically,Ihavespentatleastapartofeverydaywrestlingwithahostofexistentialquestions.IcanthelpitalmostobsessivelyIchurnthoughtsoverandoverinmyhead,tryingtounderstandthepsychologicalcontoursofthiscruelnewworld.Thequestionslargelyboildowntothefollowing:

WherehastheworldsfaithinAmericagone?

WhereistheAmericanDreamheaded?

10.Whatishappeningtothatintangibleforcethathelpedshapeourmodernworld,thatinvisiblesymbioticrelationshipbetweenthegoodwillofforeignersandthesuccessfulfunctioningoftheAmericanwayoflife,thatwillingnessbystrangerstoletusserveastherepositoryfortheirdreams,theirhopes,theirvisionsofabetterfuture?

Inthesamewaythatthescaleofournationaldebtismadepossibleonlybecauseothercountriesarewillingtobuytreasurybondsand,ineffect,lendustheirsavings,soitseemstometheAmericanDreamhasbeenlargelyfacilitatedbythewillingnessofotherpeoplestolendustheirexpectationsforthefuture.Withoutthatwillingness,theDreamisabubbleprimedtoburst.IthasntburstyetwitnessthehugenumberswhostillmigratetoAmericainsearchofthegoodlifebut1worrythatitisleakingseriously.

11.FewcountriesandcultureshaverisentoglobalprominenceasquicklyasAmericadidintheyearsaftertheCivilWar.Fewerstillhavesodefinitivelylaidclaimtoanera,whilethaterawasstillunfolding,aswedidandastheworldacknowledgedduringthe20thcentury,theAmericanCentury.

12.WhiletheoldpowersofEuropetorethemselvesapartduringWorldWarI,theUnitedStatesenteredthewarlateandfoughtthefightonotherpeopleshometerrain.WhilewholesocietiesweredestroyedduringWorldWarII,Americaspoliticalandeconomicsystemflourished,itsdriesthrived,anditsentertainmentindustriessoared.Inotherwords,asAmericarosetoglobalpre-eminenceduringthebloodyfirsthalfofthe20thcentury,itprojectedoutwardanauraofinvulnerability,avisionofnormalcyredolentwithconsumertemptationsandglamorousculturalspectacles.InanexhibitatthemuseumonEllisIslandafewyearsback,IrememberseeingacopyofaletterwrittenbyayoungPolishmigrantinNewYorktohisfamilybackhome.Urgingthemtojoinhim,hewrotethattheordinarypersononthestreetsofAmericalivedalifefarmorecomfortablethanaristocratsinPolandcouldpossiblydreamof.

15.Nowsomethingischanging.Havingdealtwithhistorylargelyonitsownterms,largelywiththeabilitytodeflecttheworstofthechaostoarenasoutsideitsborders,Americahasattractedaconcentratedfuryandvengefulireofdisastrousproportions.Thewillingnesstoforgive,embodiedinsomuchoftheworldsembraceoftheAmericanDream,isbeingreplacedbyaratherviciouscravingtoseeAmericawhich,undertheBushadministration,hasincreasinglydefineditsgreatnessbywayofmilitarytriumphshumbled.Moreover,nogreatpowerhasservedasamagnetforsuchamaelstromofhateinaneraassaturatedwithmediaimages,assusceptibletoinstantaneousopinionshapingcoverageofeventsoccurringanywhereintheworld.

16.Iguessthequestionthatgnawsatmyconsciousnesscouldberephrasedas:

HOWdoesonegiveanencoretoabravuraperformance?

Itseitherananticlimaxor,worse,adismalfailurewiththeaudienceheadingoutthedoorshalfwaythrough,talkingnotofthebrillianceoftheearliermusic,butofthetawdrinessofthelastfewbars.Ifthe20thcenturywastheAmericanCentury,itsbesthopeslargelyembodiedbysomethingakintotheAmericanDream,whatkindoffollowupcanthe21stcenturybring?

17.IntheimmediateaftermathofSeptember11,anoutpouringofgenuine,iftemporary,solidarityfromcountriesandpeoplesacrosstheglobeswathedAmericainanauraofmagnificentvictimhood.We,themostpowerfulcountryonearth,hadbeenblindsidedbyaruthless,ingenious,andbarbaricenemy,twoofourgreatestcitiesviolated.Wedemandedtheworldstears,and,overwhelmingly,wereceivedthem.Theywere,wefelt,nolessthanourdue,nomorethanourmerit.

18.Perhapsinevitably,however,thatsympathyhasnowlargelydissipated.Powerfulcountriesunderattackfightbackruthlessly,brutally,withalltheeconomic,political,diplomatic,andmilitaryresourcesattheirdisposal.
