reaganwasbornonfebruary6,1911,inanapartmentaboveabankintampico,illinois.hewasthesecondoftwosonsborntojohnedwardreagan（1883–1941）,anirishamericancatholic,andnelleclydewilson（1883–1962）,whowasofscottish,canadianandenglishdescentandamemberofthedisciplesofchrist.hisolderbrotherwasneilreagan（1908–1996）.hispaternalgreat-grandfather,michaelreagan,cametotheunitedstatesfromballyporeen,countytipperary,ireland,inthe1860s,andtherestofhispaternalfamilyimmigratedfromirelandinthe1800saswell.[3]priortohisimmigration,thefamilynamewasspelledregan.hismaternalgreat-grandfather,johnwilson,immigratedtotheunitedstatesfrompaisley,scotland,inthe1840sandmarriedjaneblue,acanadianfromqueens,new
brunswick.reagan'smaternalgrandmother,maryanneelsey,wasborninepsom,surrey,england.[4]althoughhisfatherwascatholic,reagan'smotherwasanactiveprotestantandhewasraisedinthechristianchurch（disciplesofchrist）denominationandattendedachurchschool,eurekacollege.

economicsandsociology）,reaganworkedatradiostationswocindavenport,iowa,andthenwhoindesmoinesasanannouncerforchicagocubsbaseballgames,gettingonlythebareoutlinesofthegamefromatickerandrelyingonhisimaginationtofleshoutthegame.once,duringtheninthinningofagame,thewirewentdeadbutreagansmoothlyimprovisedafictionalplay-by-play（inwhichhittersonbothteamsfouledoffnumerouspitches）untilthewirewasrestored.[5]

chicagocubsasaheadlineradioannouncer,reagantookascreentestthatledtoaseven-yearcontractwiththewarnerbrothersstudio.reagan'sclearvoice,easy-goingmanner,andathleticphysiquemadehimpopularwithaudiences;themajorityofhisscreenroleswereastheleadingmaninbmovies.hisfirstscreencreditwasthestarringroleinthe1937movieloveisontheair.bytheendof1939,hehadappearedin19films.beforesantafetrailin1940,heplayedtheroleofgeorge"thegipper"gippinthefilmknuterockne,all
