   Agroupof15,792oldermenandwomenlivinginfourdifferentcommunitiesintheUnitedStatesweretrackedfrom1987to1998.Aged45to64years,thesubjectswereexaminedfortheirweight,height,dietaryintake,smokinghabitsandexercise.

   Theresearchersnotedtheydidnotincludemoderatealcoholconsumption,becausethestudyaimedtoassesstheeffectofadoptingnewhealthyhabits,andbeginningtodrinkinmiddleageisnotwidelyrecommended.

   Interestingly,atthebeginningofthestudyonly8.5%ofthesubjectswerepracticingallfourhealthyhabits.After6years,anadditional970peoplehadadoptedallfouroftheprimaryhabits.Themostcommonswitchwastobegineatingatleast5fruitsandvegetableseachday.

   Theresearchersexaminedthe‘‘successfulswitchers’’,andconcludedthatthesubjectsmostlikelytochangehabitsforthebetterwereolder,female,thosewithacollegeeducation,higherincomeandwithoutahistoryofhighbloodpressure.

   Afterfouradditionalyearsoffollow-upthehealthiestlifestyleswitchersenjoyeda40%reductionintheriskofdeathfromanycause,anda35%lowerchanceofheartattackorstrokes.
