2. Whilefewerwomenaremarchingtothealtar—theproportionofthosemarriedbeforetheageof30hasfallenfrom50%in1960toaround20%today—theonesthatdoincreasinglylooklikeLeah.Highlyeducated,financiallyindependentwomenwereonceamongtheleastlikelytogethitched.Nowtheyaregettingmarriedatafasterratethantheirlesser-educatedpeers,andoftentohighlyeducatedmen.Theseunionsarenotonlythemostcommon,butalsothemostharmonious.NewdatashowthatAmerica’sdivorceratehascontinueditsplungefromits1981peak—from5.3to3.2divorcesper1,000peoplein2014—butthisdeclineislargelyconcentratedamongthebetter-educated.Amongcollegegraduateswhomarriedintheearly2000s,onlyaround11%divorcedwithinsevenyears,accordingtodatafromJustinWolfersoftheUniversityofMichigan.
3. Thishascreatedafairlyunevenmarriagemarket.Althoughthereturnstoacollegeeducationhaverisensharplyinrecentdecades,America’scollege-graduationratehasbeeninchingupslowly,andnowhoversataround40%.Womenmakeupagrowingshare:
thosebornin1975,forexample,werearound20%morelikelytocompleteafour-yeardegreethantheirmalecounterparts.Meanwhile,womenwithlesseducationarestuckwithastockofless-appealingmen.Womenofnearlyalllevelsofeducationhaveseentheirearningpowerclimbsincethe1970s,whiletheearningsofmenwithoutacollegedegreehavefallenbetween5%and25%,accordingtoDavidAutorandMelanieWasserman,botheconomistsatMIT.Less-educatedmenalsotendtohavemoreanachronisticviewsaboutwhoshoulddowhatathome:
theyarenotonlylesscomfortablewithpartnershipsinwhichwomenearnmore,theyalsotendtobeless-attentiveparentsandlesshelpfularoundthehousethantheirbetter-educatedpeers.

ThisasymmetryisespeciallyprofoundforAfrican-Americanwomen,whosestoreofavailablemenhasbeenwhittleddownfurtherbyhigherratesofincarcerationandmortality.Inter-racialmarriageisbecomingmorecommonbutremainsrelativelyrare.Blackwomenarehalfaslikelyasblackmentomarrysomeoneofanotherhue,accordingtothePewResearchCentre.Mismatcheddesiresamonglesser-educatedmenandwomenhaveshrunktheshareofhouseholdsheadedbyamarriedcouplefromtwo-thirdsin1960tolessthanhalftoday.Theproportionofchildrenbeingraisedbyasingleparenthasmorethandoubledinthepastfourdecades.MorethansevenintenbirthstoAfrican-AmericanwomenareoutsidemarriageHere’syourwhisky,darling亲爱的,来杯威士忌吧

Onmostmeasures,thechildrenofmarriedcouplesarealreadymorelikelytofarebetterthanthosewithsingleparents.Butwell-educatedparentsoftenhavemoremoneyforschools,saferneighbourhoodsandnutritiousfood,andfewerchildrentoinvestin(owingtothehigheropportunitycostofchild-rearingforcareer-orientedwomen).Well-educatedparentsspendmoretimewiththeirchildrenthantheirless-educatedpeers.Formothersthegapisonlyafewextrahoursaweek,butamongfathersthedifferenceisconsiderable:
thosewithajobandacollegedegreespendmorethandoublethetimeofless-educatedmen,accordingtoJonathanGuryanofNorthwesternUniversityandhisco-authors.
6.Havingfewersprogsmakesiteasiertocontinuethissupportthroughearlyadulthood,whichmoreparentsseemtobedoing.Nearly43%ofallyoungmen(ages18to34)andmorethanathirdofallyoungwomenhaveyettofleethenest,accordingtoanewPewanalysisofcensusdata.Thisboominlate-bloomersmaybeanothersignofprivilege.ArecentpaperfromtheNewYorkFedfoundthatthistrendcanlargelybeattributedtothesurgeinstudentdebtoverthepastdecadeorso,anditisbetter-offchildrenwhotendtoenrollincollegeinthefirstplace.Childrenfromhomeswithanannualincomeofover$108,650,forexample,arenearlytwiceaslikelytoenrollthanthosefromhomesthatmakelessthan$34,160,accordingtoareportfromthePellInstitutefortheStudyofOpportunityinHigherEducation.
7.Yetwhilemarriagehasbeentransformed,therolesplayedbyeachpartnerinthehomehavebeenslowertochange.ArecentPewstudyfoundthatinhouseholdswherebothparentsworkfulltime,moreoftheday-to-dayparentingresponsibilitiesfalltowomen.Mothersaretwiceaslikelyasfatherstosaythatbeingaworkingparenthashurttheircareers,innosmallpartbecausemanyemployersstillfunctionaccordingtoasinglebreadwinnermodel.Thisisslowlychanging,particularlyasmorewomenstartout-earningmen.Incoupleswithtwofull-timeworkingparents,26%ofwomenearnaroundthesameamountastheirpartners,and22%earnmore,accordingtoPew.
8.Conservativepolicymakersoftenarguethatgettingpoorerwomentomarrywillimprovethelotoftheirchildren.Butprogrammestoencouragemorepeopletowedneverseemtowork.ThisislargelybecausemostAmericansarealreadyquiteconvincedofthevalueofmarriage,andevenpoorerpeopleholdtheinstitutioninhighregard,accordingtoanewsurveyofpublicviewsoftheAmericanfamilyfromDeseretNewsandBrighamYoungUniversity.Mostagreethatmarriageisthebestarrangementforraisingchildren,andmanystillhopetotradevowsoneday.UnlikeEuropeans,whoaremovingawayfrommarriage,evenyoungerAmericansgenerallyexpecttoputaringonit,andviewcohabitationasapracticalstepalongtheway.
9.Thedistancebetweenthenumberofpeoplewithfavourableviewsofmarriageandthenumberactuallygettingmarriedisbestexplainedbythis:
manyofthemarriagesavailabledonotofferagooddealforwomen.Yetthosewhoassumethebreakdownofthenuclearfamilyreflectsagrowingcrisisofmoralsmightotherwisetakeheart:
thedeclineinmarriageinAmericahascoincidedwithasimilarlyprecipitousdeclineinjuvenilecrime,teenagepregnancyandadolescentdrug-use,andfewerchildrenaredroppingoutofhigh-school.Thosewhostillhopetowoomorepeopletothealtarmightkeepinmindthatthemarriagemarketisultimatelylikeanymarket:
