  Abstract:

Thispapersummarizesthefeaturesemergedfromnaturalclassroomobservationabouthowexperiencedteachersuseddifferentdevicestocreatebetterlearningenvironmentandoptimizelearningopportunitiestoactivelyengagethestudentsintheclassroomactivities.Thetwoparticipatingteachersprovetobeinaccordancewiththecommonlyaccepteddescriptionof“goodEnglishteachers”withtheirowncharacteristicsbypositivelyinfluencingthedifferentlevelofthepedagogicprocess.Classroomobservationisalsoprovedtobeadesirablewayforteacherdevelopment.

  1.Introduction

  ClassroomteachingisalwaysthebasicandmostimportantwayofEnglishacquisitionandthereisnoexceptionintertiarylevelinChinesecontext.Therehavebeenalotofresearchesaboutlanguageteachingmethods,butnomethodcanbeemployedasacureforall.Languageenvironment,students’motivationandlanguageteachingpolicy,allthefactorswillinfluencethechoiceofteachingmethodsandeveninoneclassperiod,methodsmayvaryaccordingtodifferentpurposes.There’snoreadyrecipeforclassroomteachingandthekeyliesinhowtheteacherschooseandimplementdifferentmethodsaccordingtotherealsituationandhowtheyincorporatevariousmethodsorganically.

  Modernsocietywitnessestheprevalenceoflearning-centeredclassroom,whilenoonewilldenythatteacherstillplaysaleadingroleasthemanager,thefacilitator,themonitor,theassessorandsoon.Asuccessfullanguageteacherknowshowtoempowerthelearnersandgetthemactivelyinvolvedbycreatingbetterchancesinalearning-centeredclassroomandoptimizingthecurrentlearningcircumstances.Nowintheabsenceofclearmethodologicalguidelines,thereshouldbevariouswaystobea“goodteacher”,asawellrounded,confidentandexperiencedindividual(Sowden,2007).

  2.Literaturereview

  2.1Naturallanguageacquisitionandclassroomteaching

  Classroomisalwaysconsiderednotasarealsituationforlanguagelearningandmanyfactorsthereareconsideredtotallydifferentfromnaturallanguageacquisition.However,classroomistheplaceforeignlanguagelearningactuallytakesplaceandclassroomteachingisthemostimportantwayoflanguageacquisitioninChinesecontext.Itisarealsocietyconstructedbothbytheteacherandthestudents.Howtomakethebestofthissmallsocietytomaximizetheopportunitiesisvitaltolanguagelearning.Languageteachersallsharetheconvictionthatgiventherightenvironmentandappropriatetasks,studentshavethechancestouseallthosecommunicativestrategieswhicharecommonfornaturallanguageuse.  3.3Findings

  3.3.1Differentstyles

  RosaandChristinadisplayeddifferentstyleintheirclassroomteachingandbothofthemwerecharmingintheirownway.

  Rosashowedeleganceallthetimeinclassroomandsheseemedtohaveeverythingundercontrolandnothingcoulddisturbthepaceofherclass.Hermottoabouttertiarylanguagelearningis“learningbydoing”,whichwasclearlyreflectedbyvarioustaskssheassignedtothestudents.Grouppresentation,groupdiscussion,role-play,on-linelearningtasksandevenhomeworkfororalpracticeinthemp3form.Rosagaveveryclearinstructionsaboutdifferentlearningtasksandtriedeverywaytoinviteallthestudentstoparticipateintheclassroomactivities.Studentswerenolongerpassiveaudiencebuttookinitiativeininteractionandactivelyparticipateintheclassroomactivities.

  Christinawasaverypassionatelanguageteacher.Shealwaysdisplayedvividfacialexpressionsandbodylanguageinclassandlaughedhappilytogetherwithherstudents.Everyclasstime,shetriedherbesttoleadherstudentswithpassionandenthusiasmtoenjoythejourneyoflearning.Sheuseddifferentwaystocreateahappyclassroomenvironmentsuchasplayingstudents’belovedEnglishsongsduringthebreak.Aremarkablecharacteristicwasherbeliefofsharinglifeexperiencesandconveyingpositiveattitudetowardsstudy,work,loveandlifewhileappreciatingthelanguage.Sheadoptedveryflexibleteachingmethodsaccordingtothelearningmaterialandsharedalotaboutherownopinionswithherstudents.

  3.3.2Sharedsuccessfulpractices

  Althoughthetwoteachersdisplayedquitedifferentstyleinclassroomteaching,theobservationstilluncoveredmanyfactorsincommonthatmightbehelpfulinvariouscontextswithindividualadaptation.Manyofthecharacteristicstheteachersdisplayedcouldbesaidtobedesirableforanysuccessfulteacher:

awarmandwelcomingatmospherewherelearnersfeelthemselvestobevalued;goodcommunicationskills;creativity;goodsubjectknowledge;well-plannedlessons;enthusiasmandsuccessfulmanagementskills.

  3.3.3Teacher’slanguageproficiency

  Bothteachersshowedhighlanguageproficiencywithclearandpleasantpronunciationwhichcouldbegoodexamplesforthestudents.TheyusedEnglishallthetimewithamoderatespeedwhichwasnotdifficultforthestudentstocatch.Asnon-nativeteachers,theirlanguageproficiencynotonlyservesas“comprehensibleinput”,butalsohelpscreateimagesofsuccessfullanguagelearners.Theyalsoholdquitebroadknowledgebecausetheyweresupposedtogivestudentscertainfeedbacksconcerningalargevarietyoftopicsbroughtbythestudentstoclassindifferentassignments.BothRosaandChristinahadgreatfamiliaritywiththeteachingmaterials.Theyjustwalkedaroundtheclassroom,talkingandorganizingactivitiesbasedonthecontentwithoutholdingthetextbookortheirteachingnotes.  3.3.4Positiveenvironment

  Bothclassroomspresentedverypositiveandencouragingatmospherewiththeteacherssmilingallthetimeandusingdifferentwaystoencouragestudentsandacknowledgeeveryeffortandprogressstudentsmade.TherewasoneparticulardetailaboutRosa.Sheusedan“invitation”gesturetoaskastudenttoexpresshis/heropinionsinclassbyextendingherpalmout.Wemightnotbestrangewiththepointinggesturewhichisnotuncommonbutmightseemaggressive.ThistinydifferencemadebyRosaissuretomakestudentsfeelmorecomfortableintheclassroom.Christinaimpressedtheauthorbyherwonderfulmemoryforstudents’names.Sheseemedtoknoweveryoneinherclassroomandeverytimesheinvitedastudenttoanswerherquestions,sheusedhis/hername.TheauthorlearnedfromtheinterviewwiththestudentsthatknowingeveryofthembynamesmakesthemfeelreallycaredforandthisisoneoftheimportantreasonswhytheylikeChristinasomuch.

  Creatingthepositivelearningenvironmentalsoincludescateringtostudents’realneeds.Rosaconductedasurveyattheendofeachsemesterandtheopinionsshecollectedareusedforthealterationofteachingplansforthecomingsemester.Christinatalkedalotwithherstudentswhenevershegottime.Classroomdecisionswerenegotiatedwiththestudentsandfeedbacksandadviceswereespeciallywelcomed.Thepositiveenvironmentisalsocreatedbyrespectingstudents’diversity.Theirstudentswerequitefreetochoosethetopicsandcontentoftheirpresentationandvariousformsofshowingtheirtalents,whichwereappreciatedwiththetolerantacceptanceandfriendlyencouragement.RosaandChristinadevelopedtheaffectivefactorsofclassroomteachingpositivelybycreatingarelaxedandencouragingenvironmentforlearning.

  3.3.5Variousteachingandclassroommanagementmethods

  RosaandChristinacombineddifferentteachingmethodsintheirclassroom.Youcan’tnamewhichmethodinparticulartheyareadopting,butyoucanfinddetailsofdifferentmethodspresentintheirteaching.Accordingtothem,thereisnorecipeforthebestmethodofteachingandmostteachingmethodswelearnedinthebooksarebasedonwesternexperiences.ThebigpopulationinChinabringsusbigEnglishclasseswithquitediversifiedproficiency.It’suptotheteacherstoadaptdifferentwaysaccordingtotheactualsituationtheyarefacedwith.  Groupworkisprominentinbothclassesbecauseoralproficiencyisaccordedwithtoppriorityandworkingingroupsisaneffectivewayofmanagingbigclasseswithatleast55students.Therewasgrouppresentationforeachclasstimeandgroupdiscussionwasacommonpracticeaboutgiventopics.Whenevertherewasagroupcompetition,classroomatmospherebecamesoactiveandtheauthorwasoncesoamusedtofindashygirlputuphergroupmember’shandforachancetoanswerthequestion!

Thereweretimesforwholeclassinstructionfortheexplanationoflanguagetermsandtherewerepairworksforroleplay.Whenthequestionwasaboutpersonalunderstandingandopinions,studentswereinvitedtoexpressthemselvesindividually.BothRosaandChristinaactedasdifferentrolesindifferentactivitiesandtriedtheirbesttoguaranteethelearningopportunities.

  3.3.6Richandauthenticlearningmaterials

  RosaandChristinaneverconfinedthecontentwithinthetextbookandusedrich,authenticandup-to-datelearningmaterialsinclass.Foratextwiththethemeof“beingfamous”,RosausedmovieclipsfromNottingHilltoencouragethestudentstotalkaboutadvantagesanddisadvantagesofbeingfamous.PicturesaboutSuperGirls,afamousChineseshowprogramwerealsousedforstudentstodiscussaboutpeople’sdesireofgettingfamousovernight.Christinaaskedherstudentstodoagroupcompetitionoftranslatingthemostpopularwords,suchas“Geilivable”inthefirstclassofthesemesterandgreatlywarmedtheclassroomatmo
