“Weknowthatpeopleexperiencingongoingconflictswithothersarelessabletofightoffcoldviruses.Wealsoknowthatpeoplewhoreporthavingsocialsupportarepartlyprotectedfromtheeffectsofstressonpsychologicalstates,suchasdepressionandanxiety,”thestudy’sleadauthor,psychologistDr.SheldonCohen,saidinastatement.“Wehavetestedwhetherawarenessofsocialsupportisequallyeffectiveinprotectingusfromsensitivitytoinfectioncausedbystressandalsowhetherreceivinghugsmightpartiallyaccountforthosefeelingsofsupportandthusprotectapersonagainstinfection.”

Intheexperiment,over400healthyadultsfilledoutaquestionnaireabouttheirperceived(感知到的)socialsupportandalsoparticipatedinanightlyphoneinterviewfortwoweeks.Theywereaskedaboutthefrequencythattheyengagedininterpersonalconflictandreceivedhugsthatday.

Then,theresearchersexposedtheparticipantstoacommoncoldvirus,andmonitoredthemtoassesssignsofinfection.Theyfoundthatbothperceivedsocialsupportandmorefrequenthugsreducedtheriskofinfectionassociatedwithexperiencinginterpersonalconflict.Regardlessofwhetherornottheyexperiencedsocialconflicts,infectedparticipantswithgreaterperceivedsocialsupportandmorefrequenthugshadlesssevereillnesssymptoms.

“Thissuggeststhatbeinghuggedbyatrustedpersonmayactasaneffectivemeansofconveyingsupportandthatincreasingthefrequencyofhugsmightbeaneffectivemeansofreducingtheeffectsofstress,”Cohensaid.“Theapparentprotectiveeffectofhugsmayresultfromthephysicalcontactitselforhuggingbeingabehavioralindicatorofsupportandcloseness.Eitherway,thosewhoreceivemorehugsaresomewhatmoreprotectedfrominfection.”
