Theresearchersdefinedadequatephysicalactivityasatleastanhourofexerciseoutsideofgymclassatleastfivedaysaweek.ChildrenwhospentthreeormorehoursadaywatchingTV,playingcomputergames,orchattingwithfriends—asidefromtimeinschoolortimespentdoinghomework—wereclassifiedassedentary.

Theresearchersfoundonlyonequarteroftheboysand15percentofthegirlsweregettingenoughexercisebythesedefinitions.Aquarterofboysandnearly30percentofgirlsweresedentaryanddidn'tgetenoughexercisewithgirlslessactivethanboysineverycountryasidefromZambia.

Uruguayhadthehighestpercentageofactiveboys,at42percent,whileZambiahadthelowest,at8percent.GirlsfromIndiawerethemostactive,with37percentmeetingexerciserecommendation,whilegirlsfromEgyptweretheleastactive,withjust4percentgettingadequateexercise.ChildreninMyanmarweretheleastsedentary,with13percentofboysand8percentofgirlsclassifiedassedentary.ThemostsedentarynationswereSt.LuciaandtheCaymanIslands,with58percentofboysand64percentofgirlsspendingatleastthreehoursadayinsedentaryactivities.
