Oldlinesandmethodsofcommunicationdonotworkeasilyorefficientlywithasmuchinformationaswehavenow.Therepeatedactionsofpreparing,sorting,filling,distributing,andkeepingtrackofrecordsandpublicationscanbeastroublesomeascalculating.Errorsoccurbecausemengrowtiredandcanbedistracted.

Thebasicjobofcomputersistheprocessingofinformation.Forthisreasoncomputerscanbedefinedasdeviceswhichacceptinformation,performmathematicalorlogicaloperationswiththeinformation,andthensupplytheresultsoftheseoperationsasnewinformation.

Althoughasharpdividinglinebetweentypesofcomputersisnotalwayseasytosee,computersareusuallydividedintotwobroadgroups:

digitalandanalog.Digitalcomputersworkbyusingspecificinformationwhichisusuallyintheformofnumbers.Analogcomputers,ontheotherhand,usuallyprocesscontinuousinformation.
