TwoAmericankindergartenteachers,MildredHillandhersisterPattyHillwrotethesong.In1893,Mildred,whostudiedmusic,cameupwiththemelodyandPattyaddedsomelyrictoitandthesongbecame“GoodMorningtoAll〞,whichtheysangeverymorningtotheirstudents.Andthelyricsranlikethis:

“Goodmorningtoyou.Goodmorningtoyou.Goodmorning,dearchildren.Goodmorningtoall.〞

Laterthetitleofthesongwasknownas“GoodMorningtoYou〞whenitwasusedforchildrentosingtotheirteacher.Andthethirdandfourthlinesbecame“Goodmorning,dearteacher.Goodmorningtoyou.〞

In1924,thesongappearedinabookofmusiceditedbyRobertColeman.Andasecondverse,“HappyBirthdaytoYou,〞wasaddedtoit.Butitisunclearwhosuppliedthewordstothesecondverse.
