Acupunctureisverymuchaholisticsystem.Um,traditionallytheChineseregardedthepersonverymuchasawholeentityandacupunctureitselfworksonanenergysystembasically,andinaverysimplifiedway,it'ssayingthat,er,youhaveanenergysystemwithinyourbodyandwhenthatenergybecomesblockedortaintedinsomeway,thenyouwillmanifestcertainsymptomsandthethingsthatwelookatinconventionalmedicineasthingslikearthritisorrheumatismare,totheChinese,merelyanimbalanceoftheenergy.So,inthisway,theymaysaytoyou,well,yes,youhaverheumatoidarthritisbutwe'regoingtoactuallylookatyourenergybalanceandrebalanceyou,and,asaresult,yoursymptomsshoulddisappear.

Traditionally,itwas,verymuch.Um,infact,traditionally,inChina,peopleonlyusedtopaythedoctorwhiletheywerewellandtheyusedtogototheirdoctorfairlyregularlyon,youknow,maybefourorfivetimesayear,andtheywouldonlypaythedoctorwhentheywerekeptwell.Andiftheygotsick,theydidn'tpaythedoctor.Andthedoctorhadvariousmethodsofwhichacupuncturewasone,dietwasanother,exercisewasanother,er,ofensuringthatthepersonlivedarightlifestyleandtheiremphasiswasonifyou'relivingarightlifestyle,ifyou'relivingintunewiththelawsoftheuniverse,goingtosleepwhenit'sdark,wakingupwhenit'slight,working,resting,doingallthesethingsproperly,thenyouwon'tgetsick.Unfortunately,ourwayoflookingatlifeintheWestisverydifferentinthatwetendtostruggleoninspiteofourheadacheandnottaketerriblymuchnoticeofourbodywhenthingsarenotquiterightandwetendtostruggleonuntilwefalloverandwegetcartedofftohospitalinanambulance.Andso,acupunctureintheWest,unfortunately,inaway,hascometobenotthepreventativemedicinethatitcouldbebecausewe'renottakingresponsibilityenoughforourselvesingoingalongandmakingsurethatwestaywell.

Soyoureallybelievethatclothescarryakindofmessageforotherpeopleandthatwhatweputonisinsomewayareflectionofwhatwefeel?

Pauline:

Ohyes,verymuchso.Peoplearebeginningnowtotakeseriouslytheideaofakindofpsychologyofclothing,tobelievethatthereisnotjustindividualtasteinourclothesbutalsoathinkingbehindwhatwewearwhichistryingtoexpresssomethingwemaynotevenbeawareofourselves.

Janice:

Butsurelythishasalwaysbeenthecase.Wealldressupwhenwewanttoimpresssomeone,suchasforajobinterviewwithaprospectiveemployer;wetendtomakeaneffortandputonsomethingsmart.

Pauline:

True,butthat'saconsciousact.WhatI'mtalkingaboutismoreofasubconsciousthing.Takeforexamplethestudentwhoisawayfromhomeatcollegeoruniversity:

ifhetendstowraphimselfupmorethantheothers,thisisbecauseheisprobablyfeelinghomesick.Similarly,ageneralfeelingofinsecuritycansometimestaketheformofover-dressinginwarmerclothesthanarenecessary.

Yes.Ithinkpeoplewhoaresociableandoutgoingtendtodressinanextrovertway,preferringbrighterormoredazzlingcolours—yellows,brightreds,andsoon.Inthesameway,whatmightbeseenasaparallelwiththeanimalkingdom,aggressiveclothesmightindicateanaggressivepersonalityorattitudetolife.Thinkaboutthethreatdisplaysusedbyanimalswhentheywanttowarnoffopponents.

Ohyes,indeed.Haircuts,jewellery,kindsoffabricused—thesethingscanallbeaformofrebellion.Buttogetbacktoclothes,Iwouldliketoaddthatawholelotaboutourpersonalityisconveyedinourclothesandthewaywelook—aggressiveness,rebelliousness,happiness,sadness,andsoon.Thesecanallbeinterpreted.Thinkoftheageingpopstarwhomaybepushingmiddleage,he'llkeepondressinguplikearebeltotrytoprovehe's'withit'still,andintouchwithhisyoungfansandcurrenttrends.

Doyouthinkthatatworkclothesandgeneralappearancehaveanysignificance?

Ipersonallythinkthattoomuchconservatismdefeatstheobjectoftheclothesindustry.Theywanttocreatenewfashionsandcolourtosellclothes,soIcan'treallysaythatIgoalongwholeheartedlywithit.Thereshouldberoomformanoeuvre,leavingpeoplescopetoexpresstheirindividualityinwhattheyarewearing.
