AlbertSzent-GyorgyiwasborninBudapestonSeptember16,1893.In1911heenteredhisuncle’slaboratorywherehestudieduntiltheoutbreakofWorldWarOne,whenhejoinedthearmy.HeservedontheItalianandRussianfronts,andhewaspermittedtoleavethearmyin1917afterbeingwoundedinaction.HecompletedhisstudiesinBudapestbeforehewenttoHamburgforatwo-yearcourseinphysicalchemistry.In1920hebecameanassistantatauniversityinLeiden,theNetherlandsandfrom1922to1926heworkedwithH.J.HamburgeratthePhysiologyInstitute,Groningen,theNetherlands.

In1926,Szent-Gyorgyiwasreadytoendhisownlifeafteranembarrassingprobleminhiscareer.Thescientist,thirty-two,hadwrittenapaperandhandedittohisbossforapprovaltopublish.Hisbossthrewitinthedustbin.Concludinghislifewasafailure,theyoungresearcherquit.Unabletosupporthiswifeandchild,hesentthemhometoherparents.Hisfinalwishwastoattendonelastscientificmeeting,tobeamongscientists,tohaveonelastgoodtime.Sohewenttothe1926InternationalPhysiologicalSocietyCongressinSweden.
