1.Fairytales

Afairytaleisasub-classoffolktales.Itwaspartofanoraltradition:

taleswerenarratedorally,ratherthanwrittendown,andhandeddownfromgenerationtogeneration.Inthemodernversions,fairytalesareoftenaboutprinces,princesses,animals,adventure,society,andromance,andfairieshaveasecondaryrole.Itisalsoquitecommonforafairytaletoteachamorallessonandhaveahappyending.Althoughinthelatenineteenthandtwentiethcenturiesthefairytalecametobeassociatedwithchildren’sliterature,adultswereoriginallyaslikelyaschildrentobeitsaudience.

2.LewisCarroll

LewisCarrollisthepennameofCharlesLutwidgeDodgson(1832-1898),aBritishauthor,mathematician,logician,andphotographer.Thefirstbornof11children,Carrollbeganatanearlyagetowritepoemsforhomemadenewspaper.In1854,hegraduatedfromChristChurchCollege,Oxford.Carrollremainedthere,lecturingonmathematics.

Duringhiswritingcareer,Carrollwroteshortstoriesandpoetry,sendingthemtovariousmagazinesandenjoyingmoderatesuccess.YearsbeforeAlice’sAdventuresinWonderland,hewasthinkingupideasforchildren’sbooksthatwouldmakemoney.Theideasgotbetterashegotolder.Alice’sAdventuresinWonderlandanditssequelThroughtheLooking-Glassturnedouttobehismostfamouswritings.Carroll’sfacilityatwordplay,logicandfantasyhasdelightedbothchildrenandadults.

Throughouthisgrowingwealthandfame,CarrollcontinuedtoteachatChristChurchuntil1881.Healsopublishedmanymathematicalpapersandbooksunderhisownname.

3.TheplotofAlice’sAdventuresinWonderland

AgirlnamedAliceisboredwhileonapicnicwithhersister.Shefallsasleepanddreamsthatshefallsdownarabbithole.Shedropsintoadreamunderworldoftheimprobableandhasseveraladventures.Sheshrinksandthengrows,meetsagroupofsmallanimalswhoareleftinaseaofherowntears,getstrappedintherabbit’shouse;meetsababy,whichchangesintoapig,andacat,whichdisappears;goestoanendlessteaparty;playscroquetwithadeckofcards,etc.FinallyAlicewakesupunderatreebackwithhersister.
