  Whenyouareakid,yougetaskedthisoneparticularquestionalot,itreallygetskindofannoying.Whatdoyouwanttobewhenyougrowup?

Now,adultsarehopingforanswerslike,IwanttobeanastronautorIwanttobeaneurosurgeon,you’readultsinyourimaginations.

  Kids,they’remostlikelytoanswerwithpro-skateboarder,surferorminecraftplayer.Iaskedmylittlebrother,andhesaid,seriouslydude,I’m10,Ihavenoidea,probablyapro-skier,let’sgogetsomeicecream.

  See,uskidsaregoingtoanswersomethingwe’restokedon,whatwethinkiscool,whatwehaveexperiencewith,andthat’stypicallytheoppositeofwhatadultswanttohear.

  Butifyouaskalittlekid,sometimesyou’llgetthebestanswer,somethingsosimple,soobviousandreallyprofound.WhenIgrowup,Iwanttobehappy.

  Forme,whenIgrowup,IwanttocontinuetobehappylikeIamnow.I’mstokedtobehereatTedEx,Imean,I’vebeenwatchingTedvideosforaslongasIcanremember,butIneverthoughtI’dmakeitonthestageheresosoon.Imean,Ijustbecameateenager,andlikemostteenageboys,Ispendmostofmytimewondering,howdidmyroomgetsomessyallonitsown.

  DidItakeashowertoday?

Andthemostperplexingofall,howdoIgetgirlstolikeme?

Neurosciencessaythattheteenagebrainisprettyweird,ourprefrontalcortexisunderdeveloped,butweactuallyhavemoreneuronsthanadults,whichiswhywecanbesocreative,andimpulsiveandmoodyandgetbummedout.

  Butwhatbumsmeoutistoknowthat,alotofkidstodayarejustwishingtobehappy,tobehealthy,tobesafe,notbullied,andbelovedforwhotheyare.Soitseemstomewhenadultssay,whatdoyouwanttobewhenyougrowup?

Theyjustassumethatyou’llautomaticallybehappyandhealthy.

  Well,maybethat’snotthecase,gotoschool,gotocollege,getajob,getmarried,boom,thenyou’llbehappy,right?

Youdon’tseemtomakelearninghowtobehappyandhealthyapriorityinourschools,it’sseparatefromschools.Andforsomekids,itdoesn’texistsatall?

Butwhatifwedidn’tmakeitseparate?

Whatifwebasededucationonthestudyandpracticeofbeinghappyandhealthy,becausethat’swhatitis,apractice,andasimplepracticeatthat?

  Educationisimportant,butwhyisbeinghappyandhealthynotconsiderededucation,Ijustdon’tgetit.SoI’vebeenstudyingthescienceofbeinghappyandhealthy.Itreallycomesdowntopracticingtheseeightthings.Exercise,dietandnutrition,timeinnature,contribution,servicetoothers,relationships,recreation,relaxationandstressmanagement,andreligiousorspiritualinvolvement,yes,gotthatone.

  SotheseeightthingscomefromDr.RogerWalsh,hecallsthemTherapeuticLifestyleChangesorTLCsforshort.Heisascientistthatstudieshowtobehappyandhealthy.Inresearchingthistalk,Igotachancetoaskhimafewquestionslike;doyouthinkthatourschoolstodayaremakingtheseeightTLCsapriority?

Hisresponsewasnosurprise,itwasessentiallyno.Buthedidsaythatmanypeopledotrytogetthiskindofeducationoutsideofthetraditionalarena,throughreadingandpracticessuchasmeditationoryoga.

  ButwhatIthoughtwashisbestresponsewasthat,muchofeducationisorientedforbetterorworsetowardsmakingalivingratherthanmakingalife.

  InXXXX年,SirKenRobinsongavethemostpopularTedtalkofalltime.Schoolskillcreativity.Hismessageisthatcreativityisasimportantasliteracy,andweshouldtreatitwiththesamestatus.

  Alotofparentswatchedthosevideos,someofthoseparentslikeminecounteditasoneofthereasonstheyfeltconfidenttopulltheirkidsfromtraditionalschooltotrysomethingdifferent.IrealizedI’mpartofthissmall,butgrowingrevolutionofkidswhoaregoingabouttheireducationdifferently,andyouknowwhat?

Itfreaksalotofpeopleout.

  EventhoughIwasonlynine,whenmyparentspulledmeoutoftheschoolsystem,Icanstillremembermymombeingintearswhensomeofherfriendstoldhershewascrazyanditwasastupididea.

  Lookingback,I’mthankfulshedidn’tcavetopeerpressure,andIthinksheistoo.So,outofthe200millionpeoplethathavewatchedSirKenRobinson’stalk,whyaren’ttheremorekidslikemeoutthere?

  ShaneMcConkeyismyhero.Ilovedhimbecausehewastheworld’sbestskier.Butthen,onedayIrealizedwhatIreallylovedaboutShane,hewasahacker.Notacomputerhacker,hehackedskiing.Hiscreativityandinventionsmadeskiingwhatitistoday,andwhyIlovetoski.Alotofpeoplethinkofhackersasgeekycomputernerdswholiveintheirparent’sbasementandspreadcomputerviruses,butIdon’tseeitthatway.

  Hackersareinnovators,hackersarepeoplewhochallengeandchangethesystemstomakethemworkdifferently,tomakethemworkbetter,it’sjusthowtheythink,it’samindset.

  I’mgrowingupinaworldthatneedsmorepeoplewiththehackermindset,andnotjustfortechnology,everythingisupforbeinghacked,evenskiing,eveneducation.Sowhetherit’sSteveJobs,MarkZuckerbergorShaneMcConkeyhavingthehackermindsetcanchangetheworld.

  Healthy,happy,creativityinthehackermindsetareallalargepartofmyeducation.IcallitHackschooling,Idon’tuseanyoneparticularcurriculum,andI’mnotdedicatedtoanyoneparticularapproach,Ihackmyeducation.

  Itakeadvantageofopportunitiesinmycommunity,andthroughanetworkofmyfriendsandfamily.ItakeadvantageofopportunitiestoexperiencewhatI’mlearning,andI’mnotafraidtolookforshortcutsorhackstogetabetterfasterresult.It’slikearemixoramash-upoflearning.It’sflexible,opportunistic,anditneverlosessightofmakinghappy,healthyandcreativityapriority.

  Andhereisthecoolpart,becauseit’samindset,notasystem.Hackschoolingcanbeusedanyone,eventraditionalschools.Soowhatdoesmyschoollooklike?

Well,itlookslikeStarbucksalotofthetime,butlikemostkidsIstudylotofmath,science,historyandwriting.Ididn’tusedtoliketowritebecausemyteachersmademewriteaboutbutterfliesandrainbows,andIwantedtowriteaboutskiing.

  Itwasareliefformygoodfriend’smom,startedtheSquawValleyKidsInstitute,whereIgottowritethroughmyexperiencesandmyinterests,while,connectingwithgreatspeakersfromaroundthenation,andthatsparkedmyloveofwriting.

  Irealizedthatonceyou’remotivatedtolearnsomething,youcangetalotdoneinashortamountoftime,andonyourown,Starbucksisprettygreatforthat.Hackingphysicswasfun,welearnedallaboutNewtonandGalileo,andweexperiencedsomebasicphysicsconceptslikekineticenergythroughexperimentingandmakingmistakes.

  MyfavoritewasthegiantNewton’scradlethatwemadeoutofbowlingballs,nobocceballs.Weexperimentedwithlotofotherthingslikebowlingballsandeventgiantjawbreakers.

  ProjectDiscovery’sropescourseisawesome,andslightlystressful.Whenyou’re60feetofftheground,youhavetolearnhowtohandleyourfears,communicateclearly,andmostimportantly,trusteachother.

  Communityorganizationsplayabigpartinmyeducation,HighFivesFoundation’sBasicsProgrambeingawareandsafeincriticalsituations.WespentadaywiththeSquawValleySkiPatroltolearnmoreaboutmountainsafety,thenthenextdayweswitchedtoscienceofsnow,weatherandavalanches.

  Butmostimportantly,welearnedthatmakingbaddecisionsputsyouandyourfriendsatrisk.Youngshouldtalk,wellbringshistorytolife.Youstudyafamouscharacterinhistory,andsothatyoucanstandonstageandperformasthatcharacter,andansweranyquestionabouttheirlifetime.

  Inthisphoto,youseeAlCaponeandBobMarleygettinggrilledwithquestionsatthehistoricalPiper’sOperaHouseinVirginiaCity,thesamestagewhereHarryHoudinigothisstart.

  Timeandnatureisreallyimportanttome,it’scalm,quietandIgettojustlogoutofreality.Ispendonedayaweek,outsideallday.AtmyFoxWalkersclasses,ourgoalistobeabletosurviveinthewildernesswithjustaknife.Welearntolistentonature,welearntosenseoursurroundings,andI’vegainedaspiritualconnectiontonaturethat,Ineverknewexisted.

  Butthebestpartisthatwegettomakespears,bowsandarrows,fireswithjustabowdrillandsurvivalsheltersforthesnowynightswhenwecampout.HangingoutattheMomentFactorywheretheyhandmakeskisanddesignclothes,hasreallyinspiredmetoonedayhavemyownbusiness.TheguysatthefactoryshowedmewhyIneedtobegoodatmath,becreativeandgetgoodatselling.

  SoIgotaninternshipatBigSharkPrinttogetbetteratdesignandselling.Betweenfetchinglunch,scrubbingtoiletsandbreakingtheirvacuumcleaner,I’mgettingtocontributetoclothingdesign,customizinghatsandsellingthem.Thepeoplewhoworktherearehappy,healthy,creative,andstokedtobedoingwhattheyaredoing,thisisbyfarmyfavoriteclass.

  So,thisiswhyI’mreallyhappy,powderdays,andit’sagoodmetaphorformylife,myeducation,myhackschooling.Ifeveryoneskithismountain,likemostpeoplethinkofeducation,everyonewillbeskiingthesameline,probablythesafestandmostofthepowderwouldgountouched.

  Ilookatthis,andseeathousandpossibilities,droppingthecorners,shreddingthespine,lookingforachurningfromcliff-to-cliff.Skiingtomeisfreedom,andsoismyeducation,it’saboutbeingcreative;doingthingsdifferently,it’saboutcommunityandhelpingeachother.It’saboutbeinghappyandhealthyamongmyverybestfriends.
