Shestartedbyemailing20localdesigners.“Iwrote,‘Youdon’tknowme.Butmyhearthurtsafterseeingtheserooms.’”shesaid.ShethenaskedwhethertheywoulddonatetheirtimeandmoneytotransformjustoneofDr.Hufford’sroomseach.

Asithappens,sixofthemwrotebackalmostimmediately.Sixroomsgotnewpaint,lightfixtures,artwork,andfurniture.Dr.Huffordwasdelighted.“Allthepatientsfeelthereliefofthepainbecauseofit,”hesaid.Heevennotedthathisownvoicewasdifferentintheroomsandthathewasbetterabletoconnectwithhispatients.

HongleiChen,adoctorwithMichiganStateUniversityinEastLansing,Michigan,wastheleadauthorofthereportonthestudy.Hesaidtheconnectionbetweenapoorsenseofsmellandanincreasedriskofdyingwaslimitedtoadultswhofirstreportedgoodorexcellenthealth.Thissuggeststhatapoorsenseofsmellisanearlyandsensitivesignofworseninghealthbeforeitisrecognizableinmedicaltests.Withapoorsenseofsmell,peoplearemorelikelytodieofbrainandheartdiseases,butnotofcancerorbreathingproblems.
