Thedoctorputthelittlebabyinhismother'sarms.Shekissedthebabyanddied.

Theoldwomanbegantodressthebabywithveryoldclothes.

Oliverwasaloneintheworld.Hewasanorphan.Noonelovedhim.

WhenOliverwassmallhelivedinanorphanagewithotherorphans.Heandtheotherchildrenhadverylittlefoodandverylittlelove.Manyofthechildrendiedbecausetheywerecoldorhungry.Oliversurvivedbuthewassmallandthin.Hisfacewasverywhite.

Theyneveraskedforasecondbowlofporridge.Theywereafraid.Butafterthreemonthstheybecameterriblyhungry.

OnedayOlivertookhisemptybowltothemaster.

Theyweresurprised.‘Hemustleavetheworkhouse!

MrBumbleputOliverinacold,darkroomforoneweek.EverymorningMrBumblebeatOliverwithastickinfrontofhisfriends.Olivercriedalldayandhedidnotsleepatnight.

OnedayMrBumblemethisfriendMrSowerberry.MrSowerberrywasatallthinman.Hemadecoffinsfordeadbodies.Manyofthedeadbodiescamefromtheworkhouse.

Oliverlookedatallthehandkerchiefshangingintheroom.

Faginsaid,'Wewashedthem.Nowsitdownandeatsomesausages.'Oliverwashappytoeatsomehotfoodinawarmroom.Hesoonfellasleep.

ThenextmorningOliverwokeuplate.Faginpreparedacupofcoffee.HeturnedaroundandlookedatOliver.Oliverclosedhiseyesanddidn'tmove.

Faginthought,'Oliverisstillasleep.'Sohetookaboxfromasecretplaceinthefloor.Heputtheboxonthetableandopenedit.Hetookoutmanybeautifulwatchesandsplendidjewels.Suddenly,FaginsawOliverwakeup.Faginquicklyclosedthebox.Hewasangryandsaid,'Whyareyouawake?
