Theislandershereknowaboutearthquakes.Haitiliesinanareawheretherearefrequenttremorsandalsotropicalstorms.Butlastweek'searthquakeregisteredsevenontheRichterscale—almostashighasthescalecango.Itwasthebiggestfor200years.IthappenedeightkilometersbeneaththeEarth'scrust—that'squiteclosetothesurface,sothetremorswerereallystrong.

Therewerealsolotsofaftershocks—tremorsthathappenafterthemainearthquake.Thoseaftershockscanalsocausedamageasbuildingscollapsefurtherandtrappeoplewhomighthavesurvivedthefirstdisaster.

TheBritishgovernmenthaspromised20millionpoundsofaidtohelpHaiti,andmanypeoplehavealsomadedonations.
