Abstract

Englishisoneofthemostimportantlanguagesintheworld.Itisimportantbecauseofitsworldwideuse.Englishisunmistakablyonelanguagebutcanbegroupedintotwomajorvarieties,BritishandAmericanEnglishwhichhavetheirowncharacter.Withthedevelopmentofthetwocountries__AmericaandtheUK,thedifferencesinsomefieldsareclearandarealsoreflectedintheirlanguage.

Englishisthemoststudiedandusedlanguageintheworld.TherearemanydifferentaspectsbetweenAmericanEnglishandBritishEnglish,andhere,ijustwanttointroducethedifferencesinthefollowingaspects:

spelling,pronunciation,vocabularygrammaretc.

Ⅰdifferencesinspelling

BritishEnglishandAmericanEnglisharebelongtothesamesystem,butthetwocountriesinthespellingsystemarestillalittledifferent.

⑴AmericanspellingalwaysmoreadjustedtothespellingregularityandpronunciationthanBritishEnglish.ThemosttypicalexampleinAmericanEnglishinuse–oror–erinsteadof–ouror-re.

ThereisobviouschangeonstressinBritishEnglishandAmericanEnglish.BritishEnglishtendstostressstronglyonesyllable,usuallythefirstandhurryovertherestoftheword.AmericanEnglishtendstoputthestressonthefirstsyllablebutalsotoputasecondarystressonthelattersyllableandpronouncestheremainingsyllablesmoredistinctly.

(1)WordsendedupwithateinAmericanEnglishalwaysputthestressonthefirstsyllable,butitwasputonthelastsyllableinBritishEnglish.

Ⅲdifferencesinvocabularyandidioms

一EnglishbasicvocabularysystemisBritishEnglishandAmericanEnglishcommonvocabularycore.Leavethiscore,whetherAmericanEnglishorBritishEnglishwillnotexist.
