AnotherdamagingeruptionalsooccurredinIndonesia.In1883,Krakatoaeruptedviolently.Thebiggestdangerfromthiseruptionwasthetsunamithatfollowed.Krakatoa’scraterfelldownintheexplosion.Partofitsunkbelowsealevel.Awallofwateroverthirtymetershighkilledover35,000people.

Indonesiahasalsobeenthesceneofotherdangerousvolcaniceruptions.In1882,theeruptionofGulunggungkilledoverfourthousandpeople.In1919,Keluterupted,killingmorethanfivethousandpeople.Mostofthedeathsinthesetwoeruptionswerefromdangerousmudflows.

MountPeleeinMrtiniqueeruptedin1902.Almost30,000peoplewerekilledasaresultofashflows.MudflowsduringtheeruptionofRuizinColumbiain1985killedover25,000people.

Canscientistspredicteruptionandhelppreventdeathsfromvolcanoes?

Therearesomewaystosometimestellthataneruptionisgoingtooccur.Manysmallearthquakesmayoccurnearthevolcano.Differentgaseswillcomeoutofit.Sometimesavolcanomightevenchangeshape.AmovingbubbleappearedinMountSaintHelensin1980.Thisallowedscientiststopredictthatitwasgoingtoerupt.Peoplemovedtothesafeplaces.Manylivesweresaved.
