ThisfictionistakenfromNewYorkerMay12,2008,writtenbyYiyunLi.Astorytalksabouthumanbeingsmarriageethicproblem.Howtomaketherightchoicebetweenfaithfulorunfaithfultowardmarriagelife?

Thegirl,unlikemostpeoplephotographedforfashionmagazines,wasnotbeautiful.Moreover,shehadnodesiretoappearbeautiful,asanyonelookingathercouldtell,andforthatreasonTeacherFeistoppedturningthepagesandstudiedher.Shehadshort,unrulyhairandwide-seteyesthatglaredatthecamerainacloseupshot.Inanotherphoto,shestoodinfrontofabedroomdoor,herbacktothecamera,herhandpushingthedoorajar.Abedanditspinksheetwereartfullyblurred.HerblackT-shirt,insharpfocus,displayedalineofwhiteprintedcharacters:

“Myfatherislessofacreaturethanapigoradogbecauseheisanadulterer.”

Thegirlwasnineteen,TeacherFeilearnedfromthearticle.Herparentshaddivorcedthreeyearsearlier,andshesuspectedthatanotherwoman,asecondcousinofherfather’s,hadseducedhim.Onhereighteenthbirthday,thefirstdaypermittedbylaw,thedaughterhadfiledalawsuitagainsthim.Assheexplainedtothereporter,hewasamemberoftheCommunistParty,andheshouldbepunishedforabandoninghisfamily,andfortheimmoralactoftakingamistressinthefirstplace.Whentheefforttoimprisonherfatherfailed,thegirlstartedablogandcalleditADeclarationofWaronUnfaithfulHusbands.
