Ihavereadallthatthewisemenhavewritten,andallthesecretsofphilosophyaremine,yetforwantofaredroseismylifemadewretched."

nightafternighthaveItoldhisstorytothestars,andnowIseehim.Hishairisdarkasthehyacinth-blossom,andhislipsareredastheroseofhisdesire;butpassionhasmadehisfacelikepaleivory,andsorrowhassethersealuponhisbrow."

31"Deathisagreatpricetopayforaredrose,"criedtheNightingale,"andLifeisverydeartoall.Itispleasanttositinthegreenwood,andtowatchtheSuninhischariotofgold,andtheMooninherchariotofpearl.Sweetisthescentofthehawthorn,andsweetarethebluebellsthathideinthevalley,andtheheatherthatblowsonthehill.YetLoveisbetterthanLife,andwhatistheheartofabirdcomparedtotheheartofaman?
