Manypeopledidnotwantthetemplesdestroyed.UNESCOagreedandraised40milliondollarsfromaroundtheworldtosavethetemples.From1964to1968,engineerstookthetemplesapartinmanypiecesandrebuiltthemhundredsofmetersbackfromthe Nile River.Today,theyarecalledtheAbuSimbelTemples,inmemoryoftheyoungboywhofirstfoundthem.

TheefforttosavetheAbuSimbelTempleswasasuccess.Soin1972,UNESCOformedtheWorldHeritageCommittee,whichprotectsplacesontheearththatareofgreatculturalornaturalvalue.
