4TodayvsManufacturingSystems
Theabovescenarioshouldbecomparedtotoday'srealitiesenforcedbytraditionalproductionengineeringphilosophybasedontheideasofmassproductionintroducedabout100yearsagobyHenryFord.Atypicalproductionlinehasthesamestructureasaserialcomputerprogram,sothatthewholeprocessisdrivenbyproductionrequirements.Thisrigidityisreflectedonthetypesoftop-downplanningandcontrolsystemsusedinmanufacturingindustry,whicharebadlysuitedtobothcomplexityandunpredictability.
Infact,themanufacturingenvironmenthasalwaysbeencharacterizedbyunpredictability.Today'smanufacturingsystemsarebasedonidealizedmodelswhereunpredictabilityisnottakenintoaccountbuthandledusingcomplexandexpensivelogisticsandbufferingsystems.
Manufacturersarealsobecomingawarethatoneoftheresultsofthetop-downserialapproachisanalienationofhumanworkers.Forexample,someofthecarmanufacturershaveexperimentedwithhavingteamsofhumanworkersresponsibleforaparticularcarratherthanperformingrepetitiveoperationsinaproductionline.Thismodelinfactbetterreflectstheconcurrencyofthemanufacturingprocessthantheassemblyline.
