In1950,GwendolynBrooksbecamethefirstAfricanAmericantowinthePulitzerPrizeforLiterature.Shewontheprizeforhersecondbookofpoemscalled“AnnieAllen”.“AnnieAllen”isacollectionofpoetryaboutthelifeofaBronzevillegirlasadaughter,awifeandamother.Sheexperiencesloneliness,loss,deathandbeingpoor.Ms.Brookssaidthatwinningtheprizechangedherlife.

Hernextworkwasanovelwrittenin1953called“MaudMartha”.“MaudMartha”receivedlittlenoticewhenitwasfirstpublished.Butnowitisconsideredanimportantworkbysomecritics.Itsmainideasaboutthedifficultlifeofmanywomenarepopularamongfemalewriterstoday.
