”Wellactually,Ihopeforawhilelongeryet.IhavebeenlivingandteachinginGulfforover30years.Andinthattime,Ihaveseenalotofchanges.Nowthatstatisticisquitshocking.AndIwanttotalktoyoutodayaboutlanguagelossandtheglobalizationofEnglish.IwanttotellyouaboutmyfriendwhowasteacherEnglishtoadultsinAbuDhabi.Andonefineday,shedecidedtotakethemintothegardentoteachthemsomenaturevocabulary.ButitwasshewhoendeduplearningalltheArabicwordsforthelocalplants,aswellastheiruses,medicinaluses,cosmetics,cooking,herbal.Howdidthosestudentsgetallthatknowledge?
Ofcourse,fromtheirgrandparentsandeventheirgreat-grandparents.It’snotnecessarytotellyouhowimportantitistobeabletocommunicateacrossgeneration.Butsadly,today,languagesaredyingatanunprecedentedrate.Alanguagediesevery14days.Nowatthesametime,Englishistheundisputedgloballanguage.Couldtherebeaconnection?
Wedon’tknow.ButIdoknowthatI’veseenalotofchanges.WhenIfirstcameouttotheGulf,IcametoKuwaitinthedaysitwasstillahardshippost.Actually,notthatlongago.Thatisalittlebittooearly.Butnevertheless,IwasrecruitedbytheBritishCouncilalongwithabout25otherteachers.Andwewerethefirstnon-MuslimstoteachinthestateschoolsthereinKuwait.WewerebroughttoteachEnglishbecausethegovernmentwantedtomodernizethecountryandempowerthecitizensthrougheducation.Andofcourse,theU.K.benefitedfromsomeofthatlovelyoilwealth.
Okay.NowthisisthemajorchangethatI’veseenhowteachingEnglishhasmorphedfrombeingamutuallybeneficialpracticetobecomingamassiveinternationalbusinessthatitistoday.Nolongerjustaforeignlanguageontheschoolcurriculum.AndnolongerthesoledomainofmotherEngland.IthasbecomeabandwagonforeveryEnglish-speakingnationonearth.Andwhynot?
Afterall,thebesteducationaccordingtothelatestWorldUniversityRankingsistobefoundintheuniversitiesoftheU.K.andtheU.S.SoeverybodywantstohaveanEnglisheducation,naturally.Butifyou’renotanativespeaker,youhavetopassatest.Nowcanitberighttorejectastudentonlinguisticabilityalone?
Perhapsyouhaveacomputerscientistwho’sa
genius.Wouldheneedthesamelanguageasalawyer,forexample?
Well,Idon’tthinkso.WeEnglishteachersrejectthemallthetime.Weputastopsign,andwestopthemintheirtracks.Theycan’tpursuetheirdreamanylonger,tilltheygetEnglish.Nowletmeputitthisway,ifImetamonolingualDutchspeakerwhohadthecureforcancer,wouldIstophimfromenteringmyBritishUniversity?
Idon’tthinkso.Butindeed,thatisexactlywhatwedo.WeEnglishteachersarethegatekeepers.AndyouhavetosatisfyusfirstthatyourEnglishisgoodenough.Nowitcanbedangeroustogivetoomuchpower,toanarrowsegmentofsociety.Maybethebarrierwouldbetoouniversity.Okay.
“But,”Ihearyousay,“Whatabouttheresearch?
It’sallinEnglish.”SothebooksareinEnglish,thejournalsaredoneinEnglish,butthatisself-fulfillingprophecy.ItdeedstheEnglishrequirement.Andsoitgoeson.Iaskyou,whathappenedtotranslation?
IfyouthinkabouttheIslamicGoldenAge,therewaslotsoftranslationthen.TheytranslatefromLatinandGreekintoArabic,intoPersian,andthenitwastranslatedonintotheGermaniclanguagesofEuropeandtheRomancelanguages.AndsolightshoneupontheDarkAgesofEurope.Nowdon’tgetmewrong.IamnotagainstteachingEnglish,allyouEnglishteachersoutthere.Ilovethatwehaveagloballanguage.Weneedonetodaymorethanever.ButIamagainstusingitasabarrier.Dowereallywanttoendupwith600languagesandthemainonebeingEnglishandChinese?
Weneedmorethanthat.Wheredowedrawtheline?
ThissystemequatesintelligencewithaknowledgeofEnglishwhichisquitearbitrary.AndIwanttoremindyouthatthegiantuponwhoseshoulderstoday’sintelligentsiastanddidnothavetohaveEnglish,theydidn’thavetopassanEnglishtest.Caseinpoint,Einstein.He,bytheway,wasconsideredremedialatschoolbecausehewas,infact,dyslexic.Butfortunatelyfortheworld,hedidnothavetopassanEnglishtest.Becausetheydidn’tstartuntil1964withTOEFL,theAmericanTestofEnglish.Nowit’sexploded.TherearelotsandlotsoftestsofEnglish.Andmillionsandmillionsofstudentstakethesetestseveryyear.Nowyoumightthink,youandme,thosefeesaren’tbad,they’reokay,buttheyareprohibitivetosomanymillionsofpoorpeople.Soimmediately,we’rerejectingthem.ItbringstomindaheadlineIsawrecently:
