IwenttoArizonaearlierthismonthtoseewhatthecollegeofthefuturemightlooklike.WhatIfoundisanexcitingneweraofhighereducationthatwillhelpmorestudentsgetagreat,personalizededucationatanaffordableprice.

These“collegeswithoutwalls,”astheyaresometimescalled,areattheforefrontoftheefforttobroadenaccesstohighereducation,especiallyforlow-incomestudentswithfull-timejobsandfamilies.Duringmyvisit,Iheardencouragingstoriesofstudentswhoweretakingadvantageoftheseflexiblelearningmodelstopursuedegreesthatcouldputthemonpathstonewcareers.
OneofthosestudentswasShawnLee.Hehadacompellingstory:
Afterdroppingoutofcollegedecadesago,hefoundhimselfinaseriesoflow-paying,oftenback-breakingjobs.Herecentlydecidedtogethisdegreewhenhehadhisfirstchildandwantedtostartbuildingabetterlife.
TuckedawayinanindustrialparkinTempe,RioSaladodidn’tlookmuchlikeatraditionalinstituteofhighereducation.Therewerenostudentsrunningtoclass.Justacoupleofglass-facedofficebuildings.Thecollegehadjust22full-timefacultyserving60,000students,withmorethanhalfofthemattendingclassesonline.
SeveralstudentsImetduringmyvisitsaidtheylikedlearningonline.“I’vetakencollegeclassesinabigauditoriumwithherdsofpeople.Therewasnopersonalconnection,”onestudentsaid.“NowIcanreachmyteacherwiththeclickofamouse.”
