sthatpumpingwillbeexpensiveandthereareotherconcerns.Thebiggestconcernofpumpingoutwaterfromthisdeepisthe

gradualsettlingdownofthelandsurface.Asthewaterispumpedout,thevacantspaceleftiscompacted(压

实)bytheweightoftheearthabove.

Eventhoughpumpingfromthesedepthsisexpensive,itisstillcheaperthandesalinating(脱盐)the

oceanwaterinthiscoastalstate.Somedesalinationfactoriesexistwherepossible,buttheyarecostlytorunandcanneedconstantrepairs.Wellsaremuchmorereliablesourcesoffreshwater,andCaliforniaishopingthatthesedeepwellsmaybetheanswertotheirseverewatershortage.
