PSALM52

Title.TotheChiefMusician.EvenshortPsalms,iftheyrecordbutoneinstanceofthegoodnessoftheLord,andrebukebutbrieflytheprideofman,areworthyofourbestminstrelsy.WhenweseethateachPsalmisdedicatedto"thechiefmusician,"itshouldmakeusvalueourpsalmody,andforbidustopraisetheLordcarelessly.Maschil.AnInstructive.EventhemaliceofaDoegmayfurnishinstructiontoaDavid.APsalmofDavid.HewastheprimeobjectofDoeg'sdoggishhatred,andthereforethemostfittingpersontodrawfromtheincidentthelessonconcealedwithinit.WhenDoegtheEdomitecameandtoldSaul,andsaithuntohim,DavidiscometothehouseofAhimelech.Bythisdeceitfultalebearing,heprocuredthedeathofallthepriestsatNob:

thoughithadbeenacrimetohavesuccouredDavidasarebel,theywerenotintheirintentandknowledgeguiltyofthefault.Davidfeltmuchthevillanyofthisarchenemy,andherehedenounceshiminvigorousterms;itmaybealsothathehasSaulinhiseye.

Doeghadsmallmatterforboastinginhavingprocuredtheslaughterofabandofdefencelesspriests.Amightymanindeedtokillmenwhonevertouchedasword!

Honourabletitlesarebutironywherethewearerismeanandcruel.IfDavidalludedtoSaul,hemeantbythesewordspityinglytosay,"Howcanonebynaturefittedfornoblerdeeds,descendtosolowalevelastofindathemeforboastinginaslaughtersoheartlessandmischievous?

"ThegoodnessofGodendurethcontinually.Abeautifulcontrast.Thetyrant'sfurycannotdryuptheperennialstreamofdivinemercy.IfpriestsbeslaintheirMasterlives.IfDoegforawhiletriumphstheLordwilloutlivehim,andrightthewrongswhichhehasdone.Thisoughttomodifytheproudexultationsofthewicked,forafterall,whiletheLordliveth,iniquityhaslittlecausetoexaltitself.

Title.ThatMaschilmeansasacredcomposition,isevidentfromPs47:

7,wherethepassagewhichwerender,"Singyepraiseswithunderstanding,"isliterally,"SingyeaMaschil,"orsongofinstruction.Thiswordoccursasatitleinthirteenplaces;andsixtimesisprefixedtocompositionsofDavid's.InseveralinstancesitoccursinconsecutivePsalms;i.e.,inthe42nd(ofwhichthe43rdisthesequel),the44thand45th,the52nd,53rd,54th,and55th,the88thand89th.AcircumstancewhichfavoursthenotionthatthetermwasonepeculiarlyusedbysomeparticulareditororcollectorofacertainportionofthePsalter.JohnJebb.

Thereisneedthatamanbemighty,butingoodness,notinmalice.Isitanygreatthingtogloryinmalice?

EXPOSITION

Ver.2.Thytonguedevisethmischiefs.Thouspeakestwithanulteriordesign.TheinformationgivenwasforSaul'sassistanceapparently,butinverydeedinhishearttheEdomitehatedthepriestsoftheGodofJacob.Itisamarkofdeepdepravity,whentheevilspokeniscraftilyintendedtopromoteayetgreaterevil.Likeasharprazor,workingdeceitfully.Davidrepresentsthefalsetongueasbeingeffectualformischief,likearazorwhich,unawarestothepersonoperatedon,ismakinghimbald;sosoftlyanddeftlydoOrientalbarbersperformtheirwork.Orhemaymeanthataswitharazoraman'sthroatmaybecutveryspeedily,underthepretenceofshavinghim,eventhuskeenly,basely,buteffectuallyDoegdestroyedthebandofthepriests.Whettedbymalice,andguidedbycraft,hedidhiscruelworkwithaccursedthoroughness.

EXPLANATORYNOTESANDQUAINTSAYINGS

Ver.2.Thytonguedevisethmischiefs,likeasharprazor,workingdeceitfully.Thusourversion.ButIdonotverywellunderstandtheproprietyofthetongue'sdevisingmischief,anddevisingitlikeasharprazor.Butwemayeasilyavoidthisharshcomparisonbyrenderingthewords:

Youcontrivemischiefswiththytongue,aswithasharprazor,Othoudealerindeceit:

i.e.,youcontrivewiththysmoothandflatteringtonguetowoundthereputationandcharacterofothers,asthoughthouwastcuttingtheirthroatswithasmoothrazor.SamuelChandler.

Ver.3.Thoulovestevilmorethangood.Helovednotgoodatall.Ifbothhadbeenequallyprofitableandpleasant,hewouldhavepreferredevil.Andlyingratherthantospeakrighteousness.Hewasmoreathomeatlyingthanattruth.Hespakenotthetruthexceptbyaccident,buthedelightedheartilyinfalsehood.SELAH.Letuspauseandlookattheproudblusteringliar.Doegisgone,butotherdogsbarkattheLord'speople.Saul'scattlemasterisburied,butthedevilstillhashisdrovers,whofainwouldhurrythesaintslikesheeptotheslaughter.

Ver.4.Thoulovest.Thouhastataste,agustoforevillanguage.Alldevouringwords.Therearewordsthat,likeboaconstrictors,swallowmenwhole,orlikelions,rendmentopieces;thesewordsevilmindsarefondof.Theiroratoryisevermorefuriousandbloody.Thatwhichwillmostreadilyprovokethelowestpassionstheyaresuretoemploy,andtheythinksuchpanderingtothemadnessofthewickedtobeeloquenceofahighorder.Othoudeceitfultongue.Mencanmanagetosayagreatmanyfuriousthings,andyetcoveralloverwiththepretextofjustice.Theyclaimthattheyarejealousfortheright,butthetruthistheyaredeterminedtoput
