ThesebooksestablishedCarsonasapublicfigurewhoadvocatedrespectfortheenvironment,buttheworkthatwouldbehermostlastinglegacywasyettocome.Shebegantoexaminedataontheeffectsofagriculturalpesticides,spurredinpartbyaletterfromtwofriendswhoownedafarminMassachusettsandexpressedconcernthatsprayedpesticideswerecausingharmtolocalwildlife.Carson'sresearchconvincedherthathighexposuretopesticidessuchasDDTthreatenednotonlybeneficialinsectsandbirdsbutalsopeople.Sheputherconclusionsinalandmarkfourthscientificvolume.SilentSpring.Inthefamousimagethatgavethebookitstitle,Carsonhypothesizedaboutanecosysteminwhichthecallingofbirdshadbeensilencedbypoisoninsoilandgroundwater.

Carsonallegedthattheregulationsgoverninguseofthesechemicalswereinadequate,thoughherpositionswerenotasextremeastheyaresometimesnowcharacterized.Shedidnotsupporttheoutrightbanningofpesticides.Rather,sheobjectedto"indiscriminate"use,whichistosay,usewithoutanythoughtforcautionandmoderation.Eventually,Carson'sviewsweretakenseriouslyatthehighestlevelsofgovernment.PresidentJohnF.Kennedy'sScienceAdvisoryCommitteesolicitedheradviceonhowtoimproverulesaboutpesticideuse.ShealsotestifiedbeforeCongress.Throughherinfluence,sheassistedinbringingaboutfarstrictercontrolsontoxicchemicalssuchasDDT,whichdeterioratesslowlyandthusremainsinsoilandgroundwaterforverylongperiodsoftime.
