2.DifferentTypesofShippingService

Theinternationalshippingmarketoffersfourtypesofservice,namely,conferencelines,non-conferencelines,non-vesseloperatingcommoncarriersandtrampservice.

2.1ConferenceLine

Ashippingconferenceisagroupofshippinglinesoperatinginanyparticularrouteunderagreementtoprovideascheduledservicewithacommontariffandafixeditineraryofportsofcall.

2.2Non-conferenceLines

Inrecentyears,alongmostinternationalroutes,non-conferencelineshaveposedachallengetotheconferencesystem.Thisisattributabletothedevelopmentofcontainerizationandemergenceofmanyindependentcarriers.Asaresult,alongsomeroutes,theconferencelineshavebeenforcedtocometotermswiththenon-conferencelinesinregardtorates,andtermsandconditionofservice.

2.3Non-vesselOperatingCommonCarrier（NVOCC）

AnNVOCCisacarrierwhooperatesaregularscheduledservice.Hedoesnotownoroperatethevesselsbywhichseatransportationisprovided.AlthoughtheNVOCCisacarrierinhisrelationshipwiththeactualshipper,heisashipperinhisrelationshipwiththeactualcarrier.Heassumestheroleofaprincipalandperformsseveralfunctions.Heassumesresponsibilityforoceancarriers,bothconferenceandnon-conferencelines.Herendersausefulservicebyprovidinggroupageorconsolidationservice,particularlytosmallshipperswhodonothavemuchbargainingpowerinnegotiatingrates.
