TheancientOlympicGamesofGreecetookplaceeveryfouryearsforhundredsofyears.ButafterthefifthcenturyBC,theGreekswereconqueredbytheRomans,andGreecebecamepartoftheRomanEmpire.
InRomantimestheOlympicGamesbecameaprofessionalsportscompetition.Finally,theGameswerestoppedbyaRomanemperorinAD394,aboutathousandyearsaftertheyhadfirstbegun.
OnJune23,1894,PierredeCoubertin,aFrenchman,foundedtheIOC（InternationalOlympicCommittee）inaceremonyheldattheUniversityofSorbonneinParis.DemetriusVikelasfromGreecebecamethefirstpresidentoftheIOC．Twoyearslater,in1896,thefirstOlympicGamesofthemodernerawereheldinAthens.
