“Justbyrestoringthepanda’shabitat,that’sgiventhembacktheirspaceandmadefoodavailabletothem,”Hilton-Taylorsaid.

Alossofhabitats,onthecontrary,waswhatcausedthenumberofpandastodroptojustover1,200inthe1980s,Hilton-Tayloradded.

Apartfromgiantpandas,theTibetanAntelopehasalsomovedfrom“endangered”to“nearthreatened”.AccordingtoastatementfromIUCN,theanimal’snumbersdwindledseverely—droppingfromaround1milliontoanestimated65,000-72,500inthe1980sandearly1990s—duetocommercialpoaching.Rigorous(严格的)protectionhassincebeenenforcedtoprotectthebeastsandthepopulationisnowlikelytobebetween100,000and150,000.

Despitetheimprovedstatuses,wildanimalslikethegiantpandaandtheTibetanAntelopestillfacegreatchallenges.TheIUCNwarned,forexample,thatongoingthreatsfromclimatechangecouldeliminatemorethan35percentofthepanda’sbamboohabitatinthenext80years,whichwouldreversethespeciesrecentgains.
