Backthen,theCherokeehadnowaytowritedownwordsintheirownlanguage.SequoyahbelieveditwasimportantfortheCherokeetohaveasystemofwriting.So,in1809,hesetouttocreateanalphabetthattheCherokeecouldusetodojustthat.
Sequoyahstartedbydrawingpictures,witheachonerepresentingadifferentwordoridea.Hesoonrealizedthatwritingsentencesusingpictureswouldbemuchtoodifficult.Thereweretoomanywords.Noonewouldeverbeabletorememberthatmanypictures.
Sequoyahdecidedtotryadifferentapproach.Hebegantodevelopsymbolstostandforthesounds,orsyllables,whichmadeupwords.Twelveyearslater,hecompletedasystemofwritingwith86differentsymbols.EachonestoodforadifferentsyllableintheCherokeelanguage.Thesymbolscouldeasilybeputtogethertoformwords.SoonthousandsofCherokeewereabletoreadandwriteintheirownlanguage.
