SanteFe,NewMexicomultimillionaireForrestFennhasalwayslovedagoodadventure.Asasmallchildbeforeeight,heandhisbrother,SkippyspentsummervacationsmakingexplorationinYellowstoneNationalPark.
Asateen,FennidolizedthedecoratedWorldWarⅡfighterpilot,calledRobinOldsandlatteremulatedhisheroduringtheVietnamWarasanAirfighterpilottogotoNewMexicoandsettledthereasanartsandantiquesdealer,huntingdownvaluablepaintings,rugs,warmemorabilia,andotherantiquetosell.

TheAncientGreekphilosopherPythagorasisbestknowntodayforhismathematicaltheorem,whichhauntsthedreamsofmanygeometrystudents,butforcenturieshewasalsocelebratedasthefatherofvegetarianism.Ameatlessdietwasreferredtoasa“Pythagoreandiet”foryears,upuntilthemodernvegetarianmovementbeganinthemid-1800s.
WhilePythagoraswasanearlyproponentofameatlessdiet,humanshavebeenvegetarianssincewellbeforerecordedhistory.Mostanthropologistsagreethatearlyhumanswouldhaveeatenapredominantlyplant-baseddiet;afterall,plantscan’trunaway.Additionally,ourdigestivesystemsresemblethoseofherbivorescloserthancarnivorousanimals.Prehistoricmanatemeat,ofcourse,butplantsformedthebasisofhisdiet.
Pythagorasandhismanyfollowerspracticedvegetarianismforseveralreasons,mainlyduetoreligiousandethicalobjections.Pythagorasbelievedalllivingbeingshadsouls.Animalswerenoexception,someatandfishwerebanishedfromhistable.Strangelyenough,healsobanishedavegetablethathasaplaceofhonoronmostvegetarianmenustoday,thehumblebean.Hisfollowerswereforbiddentoeatoreventouchbeans,becausehethoughtbeansandhumanswerecreatedfromthesamematerial.Favabeanswereespeciallybad,astheyhavehollowsteamsthatcouldallowthesoulsofthedeadtotravelupfromthesoilintothegrowingbeans.
