  InNovember,millionsofMonarchsfalllikebright,goldenrainontotheforestsinthemountainsofcentralMexico.Inthesilenceofthesemountainsyoucanhearastrangeflapping(拍动)ofwings,astheMonarchsarriveattheirdestination.Inthemountains,whichreachaheightof3,000metres,thebutterfliesaresafe.

  Beforereachingtheirjourney’sendtheyhavefacedstrongwinds,rainandsnowstormsandtheydonotallmanagetoreachtheirdestination.Whenthewintersarereallybad,perhaps70percentofthemwillnotsurvive.TheirlongjourneytoMexicoisthoughttobeoneofthemostamazingeventsinthewholeoftheAmericancontinent.WhentheygettheretheywillstayuntilthebeginningofApril,whentheirinternalcalendartellsthemthatitistimetogoback.Thelongjourney,withallitsdangers,beginsagain.

  Thesedelicatecreaturesnowfacedangerofanotherkind-fromscientificprogress.IntheUS,millionsoffarmsgrowgeneticallymodifiedmaizewhichispurepoisonforthebutterfly.Laboratoryexperimentshaveshownthathalfofthebutterflieswhichfeedontheleavesofgeneticallymodifiedmaizediewithin48hours.NotallexpertsagreethatthisvarietyofmaizeisresponsibleforthethreattotheMonarchs.Inspiteofthesedoubts,theEuropeanUnionhasrefusedtoapprovenewcropsofgeneticallymodifiedmaizeuntilfurtherinvestigationshavebeencarriedout.
