ManyofyoufeltthatwayonElectionDayfouryearsago."HopeandChange"hadapowerfulappeal.ButtonightI'daskasimplequestion:

IfyoufeltthatexcitementwhenyouvotedforBarackObama,shouldn’tyoufeelthatwaynowthathe’sPresidentObama?

有多少日子，你们醒来，感觉美国真的发生了一些特别的事情？

在四年前的那个选举日，你们中的许多人有那种感觉。

“希望和改变”有着强大的吸引力。

但是今晚，我要问一个简单的问题：

如果当你为巴拉克·奥巴马投票时感觉那么兴奋，难道在他成了奥巴马总统之后你不应该感到同样兴奋吗？

Youknowthere’ssomethingwrongwiththekindofjobhe’sdoneasPresidentwhenthebestfeelingyouhadwasthedayyouvotedforhim.ThePresidenthasn’tdisappointedyoubecausehewantedto.ThePresidenthasdisappointedAmericabecausehehasn’tledAmericaintherightdirection.Hetookofficewiththe--withoutthebasicqualificationthatmostAmericanshaveandonethatwasessentialtothetaskathand:

Hehadalmostnoexperienceworkinginabusiness.Jobstohimareaboutgovernment.

你们知道，错的是他作为总统所做的那些事情，而你们拥有的是你们为他投票时的感觉。

现任总统使你们失望并非他希望如此，现任总统使美国失望是因为他未能将美国引向正确的方向。

他就职的时候缺乏，缺乏很多美国人都有的基本资格，其中最基本的一项——对他即将担任的职务而言——他几乎没有任何在企业工作的经验。

工作对他而言，就是政府工作。

IlearnedthereallessonsabouthowAmericaworksfromexperience.WhenIwas37,Ihelpedstartasmallcompany.MypartnersandIhadbeenworkingforacompanythatwasinthebusinessofhelpingotherbusinesses.Sosomeofushadthisideathatifwereallybelievedouradvicewashelpingcompanies,weshouldinvestincompanies.Weshouldbetonourselvesandour--onouradvice.

从我自己的经历中，我汲取了许多如何让美国运转的教训。

当我37岁时，我帮着筹办一家小公司。

我的合伙人和我曾服务于一家专门帮助其他企业的企业。

所以我们中的一些人便萌生了这样的念头：

如果我们的建议果真能帮助这些公司，我们自己便应该投资公司。

我们应该为我们自己和自己的那些建议赌一把。

SowestartedanewbusinesscalledBainCapital.Theonlyproblemwas,whilewebelievedinourselves,notmanyotherpeopledid.Wewereyoungandhadneverdonethisbeforeandwealmostdidn’tgetofftheground.Inthosedays,sometimesIwonderedifI'dmadeareallybigmistake.Bytheway,I--I'dthoughtaboutaskingmychurch’snfundtoinvest,butIdidn't.IfigureditwasbadenoughthatImightlosemyinvestors’money,butIdidn’twanttogotohelltoo.ShowswhatIknow.AnotherofmypartnersgottheEpiscopalChurchnfundtoinvest.Andtodaytherearealotofhappyretiredpriestswhoshouldthankhim.

这样我们便创办了自己的企业，叫做“贝恩资本”。

唯一的问题是，当我们相信自己时，并非许多其他的人也相信我们。

那时我们年轻，而且从未干过这个，公司几乎无法顺利开张。

那些日子里，有时我甚至想，我是否真的犯了一个大错误？

顺便说一句，我的确想过请求我们教堂的养老基金来投资，但最终我没那么做。

我想如果运气不好我会把我投资人的钱赔光，但我又不想下地狱。

瞧，我就那么点见识。

而我的另一个合伙人得到了圣公会养老基金会的投资。

于是，那儿的许多牧师今天都过着快乐的退休生活，他们都应该感谢他。

Thatbusinesswestartedwith10peoplehasnowgrownintoagreatAmericansuccessstory.Someofthecompanieswehelpedstartarenamesyou--youknow,andyou'veheardfromtonight:

anofficesupplycompanycalledStaples,whereI'mpleasedtoseetheObamacampaignhasbeenshopping;TheSportsAuthority,whichofcoursebecameafavoriteofmyboys.WehelpedstartanearlychildhoodlearningcentercalledBrightHorizonsthatFirstLadyMichelleObamarightlypraised.Andatatimewhennobodythoughtwe'deverseeanewsteelmillbuiltinAmerica,wetookachanceandbuiltoneinacornfieldinIndiana.Today--TodaySteelDynamicsisoneofthelargeststeelproducersintheUnitedStates.

然而现任总统竞选连任的中心议题便是抨击“成功”。

是否有些奇怪？

一个抨击成功的人，居然能够领导一个自大萧条以来最坏的经济走向复苏？

在美国，我们赞赏成功，我们从不为成功道歉。

Now--Nowweweren’talwayssuccessfulatBain.Butnooneeverisintherealworldofbusiness.That’swhatthisPresidentdoesn’tseemtounderstand.Businessandgrowingjobsisabouttakingrisk,sometimesfailing,sometimessucceeding,butalwaysstriving.It'saboutdreams.Usually,itdoesn'tworkoutexactlyasyoumighthaveimagined.SteveJobswasfiredatApple.Andthenhecamebackandchangedtheworld.It’sthegeniusoftheAmericanfreeenterprisesystem--toharnesstheextraordinarycreativityandtalentandindustryoftheAmericanpeoplewithasystemthat'sdedicatedtocreatingtomorrow’sprosperity,nottryingtoredistributetoday's.

当然，我们在贝恩公司并非总是成功，在真实的企业界没有谁能够这样。

而这正是现任总统看来不能理解的。

办企业，增加就业总要承担风险——有时成功了，有时失败了，然而你始终在奋斗。

它又像一个梦想，结果与我们最初的设想不会一模一样。

史蒂夫·乔布斯曾被苹果公司开除，但后来他胜利回归，改变了整个世界。

这就是美国自由企业制度的天赋特点——调动美国人民非凡的创造力、才能与勤奋去创造明天的繁荣，而不是纠结于如何分配今天的财富。

现任总统可以要求我们忍耐，现任总统可以告诉我们那是别人的错，现任总统可以告诉我们下一个四年他能让经济恢复正常。

但是现任总统不能告诉我们，说我们的境况比他就职时更好。

美国已经足够有耐心，美国人民以良好的愿望支持过现任总统；但是今天，翻开历史新篇章的时候到了。

现在就是重建美国承诺的时候。

ManyAmericanshavegivenuponthisPresidentbuttheyhaven’teverthoughtaboutgivingup--notonthemselves,notoneachother,andnotonAmerica.Whatisneededinourcountrytodayisnotcomplicatedorprofound.[It]doesn'ttakeaspecialgovernmentcommissiontotelluswhatAmericaneeds.WhatAmericaneedsisjobs--lotsofjobs.

许多美国人已经放弃了现任总统，但他们从未想过放弃他们自己，从未想过放弃彼此，从未想过放弃美国。

今天我们国家需要什么，并不难解也不深奥，不需要一个特别的政府委员会来告诉我们美国需要什么。

Intherichestcountryinthehistoryoftheworld,thisObamaeconomyhascrushedthemiddleclass.Familyincomehasfallenby4,000dollars,buthealthinsurancepremiumsarehigher,foodpricesarehigher,utilitybillsarehigher,andgasolineprices,they'vedoubled.TodaymoreAmericanswakeupinpovertythaneverbefore.NearlyoneoutofsixAmericansislivinginpoverty.Lookaroundyou.Thesearen'tstrangers.Theseareourbrothersandsisters,ourfellowAmericans.

在这个世界历史上最富裕的国家里，奥巴马经济已经压垮了中产阶级。

家庭收入已下降到4000美元，但是医疗保健费用上涨了，食品价格上涨了，水电费上涨了，而汽油价格则翻了一番。

差不多每六个美国人中就有一个生活在贫困之中。

Hisplantoraisetaxesonsmallbusinesswon'taddjobs--itwouldeliminatethem.HisassaultoncoalandgasandoilwillsendenergyandmanufacturingjobstoChina.Histrilliondollarcutstoourmilitarywilleliminatehundredsofthousandsofjobs,andalsoputoursecurityatgreaterrisk.His716billiondollarcuttoMedicare,tofinanceObamacare,willbothhurttoday'sseniorsanddepressinnovationandjobsinmedicine.Andhistrillion-dollardeficits,theyslowoureconomy,restrainemployment,andcausewagestostall.TothemajorityofAmericanswhonowbelievethatthefuturewillnotbebetterthanthepast,Icanguaranteeyouthis:

IfBarackObamaisre-elected,you'llberight.

他的政策没有促进就业增长，反而减少了就业。

我可以告诉你们，奥巴马总统将把美国领向何方：

他对小企业增税的计划不会增加就业，只能打击就业。

他对煤、气和石油业的抨击，将把能源与制造业的就业机会拱手送给中、国。

他削减万亿军费开支将消灭几十万个工作岗位，并且让我们在安全方面承受极大的风险。

他拨出7160亿美元给医疗保健，来支持“奥巴马医改”，既伤害了今天的长者，又压抑了医药领域的创新与就业。

至于他的万亿财政赤字，则拖慢了我们的经济，压抑了就业的增长，导致了工资的停滞。

对那些不相信未来会比过去更好的大多数美国人，我敢担保，如果奥巴马再次当选，你们的估计就是正确的。

不同于现任总统，我有一个计划，它将创造120万个新的就业机会。
