This436roomhotelsituatednexttoMalpensaAirport,Milan,hasaroundedshellcutintosevenbays,designedbyItalianfirmKingRoselliArchitetti.

TheSheratonMilanMalpensaAirportHotel&ConferenceCentrehasacontinuousfibreglassskinexteriorwhichiswrappedaroundaseriesofsteelarchestogivethebuildingitscurvedshape.

Hotelwindowsfaceoutfromtherecessedopenings,avoidinganydirectviewsintotheroomsfromtheadjacentairport.

Internallythehotellobbyisdefinedbyawovenceiling,whichisreflectedinthepolishedterrazzofloor.

DesignforarchitecturalexteriorsofhotelatMalpensaAirport（Milan,Italy）.

WewerecommissionedtodesigntheexteriorsofthislargehotelinfrontofMalpensaInternationalAirportasaresultofourcompetitionwinningentryfortheoveralldesignofthebuilding.Despiteitssize（420mlong,64mwide,21mhigh）thebuildingwasconceivedasadesignobject.PartlybecauseMilanisItaly’sdesigncapital,andpartlybecausewewereinterestedininvestigatingthetechnicalandarchitecturalpropertiesofaskinormembranetobeperceiveddynamicallyasfaçadenotonlyonitsfoursidesbutalsotheroof-visiblefromtheaccessroadtotheairportcomplex.

Thehotelitselfissetonanexistingbaseconsistingofahugecarparkovertherailwaythatpassesunderground.Thehotelhas436rooms,aconferencecentre,aspaaccessibledirectlyfromtheairportviaanexistingconnectingbridgeoverthesurroundingringroad.

Membrane

Wewerelookingforaseamlessshelltofoldaroundthefunctionalvolumesofthebuildings.Afterresearchinganddetailinganumberofalternatives-titaniumzincsheeting,Corianandsimilarsolidsurfacing,sprayedpolyurethanedamp-proofmembranes,andwaterproofconcrete-resinbasedfinishes-wefinallyoptedforpultrudedfibreglasspanels.Pultrusionisamanufacturingprocesscombiningextrusionandpullingfibreglassthroughadiethatcanprovidepanelsupto1400mmwideandalmostinfinitelengths-weneededlengthsofupto25meters.Asidefromthelengthsofthepanels,thematerialhasaseriesofqualitieshighlysuitableforbuilding:

itislightweight,elastic,verystableinextremetemperatures（-20°Cto+50°C）,fireproofandwaterproof.Reducedcostsandconstructiontimescoupledwiththeinherentqualitiesandfinishofthematerialhaveprovedtobedecisiveinachievingthedesiredresultinthisproject.Thismaterialismoreoftenusedforindustrialproductsandsoanenormousexperienceofprecisiondetailingtotighttoleranceshasbeenaccumulatedovertheyearswhichcameinveryusefulinthedetaildesignofthemembrane.

Theshelliscurvedaroundasubframeofpultrudedstructuralprofilesandsteelarches,wrappingtheentirelengthofeachbay,ormoduleofthehotelinasmooth,continuousskin.Thelengthofthehotelcomprisessevenbaysseparatedbycourtyards,withthecurvedfaçadesfacingtheairport,andtheroomslookingoutonthecourtyards.Thealmostflatroof,istreatedasafaçadetobeseenfromtheairport,withopeningsontoterraces,light-wellsorinteriorcourts.Theplantextractsandventilation“breath”throughventstwistedoutoftheroofmembrane.

GuestRoomBlocks

Thelayoutoftheroomsareorganisedaroundthesecourtyardswhichgiveabar-codeformtotheplanandavoidadirectviewfromtheairportintoguestrooms.Thewesternfaceofthehotelisleftopentoemphasisthehorizontalityofthevolumewithshallowwaterpoolssetintothelowerlevelattheends.

Grille

Thecarparkistobecladwithagrilleopenfornaturalventilationbutopaquefromtheoutside,tocreateavisuallysolidbasetheentirelengthofthebuilding.

Façade

Ontheopen（west）sidetheseblocksofroomsarticulatethefaçadeinanirregularsequenceofsolidandvoid.ThesolidsinturnarearticulatedbyaseriesofthicksculpturalPVCblackoutcurtainswhichgivebothdepthanddynamictotheoverallelevation.Thefoldedshellalternateswiththeglasstransparencyoftheenclosedvolumesinwhichthereflectivecurtainsmirrortheexternallightingconditionstoproduceabuildingthatisconstantlychangingaspect.Thoughnormallyconsideredanitemofinteriordesign,theblack-outcurtainswereseenasanintegralpartofthefaçadefromanearlystage.Theregularityonthemullionandtransomgridissyncopatedbytheirregularityofthecurtainsseenthroughtheextra-clearglass.

Dynamic

Themovementofpeopleastheyarriveandleavetheairport,thetensioncreatedbetweensolidandvoid,curvedandstraightline,theplayoflightreflectedoffandthroughthebuilding,provideavariationofviewsandgiveadynamictothearchitecturethatwerelookingfor.

Escalatorconnectionbetweengroundandmainfloorlobbies

Theescalatorblockwasalsoconsideredasanelementofthearchitecturalvolumeratherthananaspectofinteriordesign.Thecentralportionofthewholebuildingneededavisualandvolumetricconnectionbetweenthegroundfloorentrances,from/totherailwayandthemaincarparktothewest,andthemainentrylobbyfromtheairport9,61mabove.Thisisachievedbytakingtheloweredge（at+6,25m）oftheshellenvelopingthewholebuildingandpullingasectionofitdowntotheground（at-3,30m）atthoughitwereelastic.Thevolumecreatedcontainstheescalatorblock.Fromtheinsidetheescalatorscatapultthevisitortothefirstmainlevelofthehotelopeningintoafullheightvoidtoppedbylargelight-well.Fromtheoutsidethevolumestronglysignalsthewesternentrancetothebuildingwithconnectionstotherailwaybelow,theairportbehind-onaxis,andthehotelabove.

TensileStructures

Betweeneachblockofroomstheemergencystaircases,alsoseenfromtheairportsidethroughthetransparentcorridorlinks,willbecladinatensilestructure（tobebuiltinthecomingmonths）.Stretchingoverthestaircaseandbetweentheblocks,thisessentialcomponentcompletingthedesignofthewesternfaçadewithitssculpturalorganicform,bondsthepartstogetherandgivesatensiontotheoverallcomposition.

BuildingaslargescaleProductDesign

Theperceptionofthebuilding,oftenseenasawholedespiteitslength,heldtogetherinaseamlessshellreinforcestheideaofitasapieceofproductdesignonanurbanscale.

Interiors

Abouthalf-waythroughthedesignofthebuildingexteriorswewereaskedbyStarwood（Sheraton）todesignthemainentrancespacesofthehotel.Allotherinteriors（guestrooms,conferencecentre,restaurants）weredesignedbySaporitiDesignHotel.

GroundFloorLobby（-3,36m）

Thegroundfloorlobbymainspaceisdefinedbyagianttrellisfalseceiling.Aback-dropofbamboocanesbehindatranslucentfilmonbothsidesprovideback-lightingtotheSheratonLinkandsittingareas.Thedarkreflectivefloorinvenetianterrazzoreflectingtheceilingandlightwallsispliedoverthewoodvolumeofthereceptiondesk.Anotherexampleofsurfaces,betheyinteriororexterior,foldedtodefineaspace.

FirstFloorLobby（+6,25m）

Thespaceconnectsallthreelevelsofthehotelviatheescalatorblockdowntothegroundfloorentranceandthefalseceilingoriginatingatthetopfloorlevelandservesastheconferencecentrereception.

ClubLounge（+14,25m）

TheClubLoungeissituatedontheupperlevelofthehotelwithaspectacularviewofMonteRosa.Thewarmtonesofwoodandgold,purpleandvioletofthefurnishingcontrastofwhiteandreflectivesurfacesoftheexteriorstructure.
