1Introduction
Englishplaysasignificantroleinglobalstageandpresentsitsfeaturesinmanyregions.Therefore,Englishglobalizationandlocalizationturnup.Itisworthpayingattentiontothephenomenon.“Englishglobalizationprovidesaflatforvariousculturestocommunicate.Becauseofhightechnologydevelopment,theworldhascomeintothetimeofinternet,whichcausesEnglishglobalization.Englishbecomesaninternationallanguage”(LiWenzhong19).DuetothewidespreadofEnglishinvariousregions,Englishlocalizationappears.“EnglishlocalizationistherebornofEnglish.ItistheproductthatEnglishandotherlanguagescombineandchange.ThespreadofEnglishintheworldhasprovedthatEnglishmustexperiencesomechangesinvariousregions.Anditwillrootittheareaasanewform”(LiTing39).
Atpresent,moreandmorepeopledesiretolearnEnglishandmasterit.UnderEnglishglobalizationandlocalization,thesignificanceofEnglishhasbecomemoreprominentthanitiseverbefore.TherearethemostEnglishlearnersexistinginChina.WithChina’sfastdevelopment,ithassetahighandsteadysituationinglobalstage.EnglishistakenasasteppingstonebylotsofChineseEnglishlearners.However,EnglishteachinginChinaisoneofthemostdisputedtopicsinteachingpractice.WhatkindofEnglishisfitforChineseEnglishlearners?
WhatinfluenceiscausedbyEnglishglobalizationandlocalizationonEnglishteachinginChina?
Therefore,itismeaningfultostudyEnglishteachinginChinafromanewangleofEnglishglobalizationandlocalization.ItcanbeeasilyacceptedthatEnglishmustbechangedinsomeaspectswhenitspreadseverywhereintheworld,whichshouldnotbeignoredbutpaidcloseattentionto.Nowadays,mostEnglishlearnerswanttobe“Englishnativespeakers”.ItseemsthatonlyinthiswaycantheyreallymasterEnglish;meanwhile,itisEnglishglobalizationthatencouragesEnglishlearnerstobe“foreigners”,notthemselves.InChina,shouldChinesespeakEnglishwith“foreignflavor”?
WhatkindofEnglishtalentsshouldonearthbefostered?
ThatdeepimplicationtoEnglishteachinginChinathroughEnglishglobalizationandlocalizationpresentsmayexposesomeproblemshidinginEnglishteaching.Asaresult,EnglishglobalizationandlocalizationcanbeusedtoguideEnglishteachingsothatabetterteachingeffectcanbeachieved.
Hightechnology,convenienttransportationandclosecommunicationmakethewholeworlda“small”village.Toalargeextent,Englishplaysansignificantroleinworldwidecommunicationandbringsvariouscountriestogether,whichcausesthosenon-Englishspeakingcountrieslosingmanychancestojointheworld.Thatistosay,thechanceshidingbehindEnglisharewaitingforpeopletoexplore.Undertheglobalization,thereisnodoubtthatEnglishhasalreadybecomeinternationallanguagewhichbelongstothewholeworld.NotonlydoesEnglishplayaveryimportantrole,butitisthemostsignificantlanguageofthefiveofficiallanguagesintheUnitedNations,andmanyotherinternationalandlocalinstitutionsalsotakeEnglishastheonlyworkinglanguage.Moreover,Englishisthemaincarrierofadvancedscienceandtechnology,themainlanguageofworldmediaandthemainmediumofeducation,“soEnglishglobalizationwillnotfollowpeople’swill”(LiShaohua3).
TheconsequenceofEnglishglobalizationisEnglishlocalization,everylanguageisusedtopresentthereality,transmitinformationanddelivercultures.However,differentcountrieshavedifferentreality,informationandcultures.VariouscultureshavemingledwithEnglish,whichcannotbeavoidedandshouldnotbeavoided.EachcountryhasitsownEnglishofdistinguishedfeatures,sodoesChina.
Chinaisacountrywithsuchcolourfulcultures,whichothercountriesdonothave.ThereisnoexactexpressionforminEnglish,either.SoEnglishinChinaisinevitablyblendedwithChinesefeatures.AsforEnglishteachinginChina,someteachersenjoyexcessivelyapproachingtheculturesofEnglish-speakingcountries,butgivingupChineseowncultures.Asaresult,linguisticpovertyappears.WhentheytalkaboutChinesecultures,theycannotexpresstheirthoughtsexactlyinEnglish.Atlast,theyhavetouseChinesetoexplainEnglishtexts.Englishasaninternationallanguageatleastbringstwoenlightenments.Firstly,thespreadingofEnglishmustexperienceaprocessoftakingoffsomeoriginalculturesandmeanwhileimplantingsomenewcultures.Secondly,Englishmustkeepitsintelligibilityallovertheworld.
EnglishglobalizationandlocalizationhaspushedEnglishteachingintoahighlevel,whichcausesmoreattention.Englishglobalizationhasnodoubtbroughtpeoplegreatbenefits,butitmayalsothreatenotherlanguagessothatmanylocaloriginalculturesfade.Therefore,EnglishlocalizationshouldweighequallytoEnglishglobalizationtoavoidlanguagethreateningandcultureslosing.SinceEnglishglobalizationandlocalizationplaysuchasignificantrole,itisnothardtofindthatEnglishteachinginChinamoreorlessgetssomeimplication.ForEnglishteachinginChina,thereexistsalotoftypicalproblems,suchas,theseparationofsituationandcommunication,theinsufficiencyofChineselocalculturesincontentsandthenegligenceoflearners’emotionandlearningefficiency.Tosomeextent,suchsituationisduetothefailuretoEnglishglobalizationandlocalization.Therefore,EnglishteachinginChinaneedstotakeaccountofEnglishglobalizationandlocalization,whichmayadvanceEnglishteachingandsolvesometypicalteachingproblems.
2Literaturereview
“Globalization”hasincreasinglybecomeahigh-frequencywordinpeople’sdailylife.Basedonhightechnologyandfastlabordevelopment,thecommunicationofthewholeworldandpeople’sactivitiessurpasstheboundaryofdifferentregions.“Asforlanguage,Englishhasbecomeanestablishedinternationallanguage.SomeoneevercomparedEnglishtoamysterylamp.Whenpeopleopenit,adoortointernationalbusiness,scienceandtechnologyisopen”(WangPujun2003:
16).“Intheearly1900s,theexpansionofEnglandlaidasolidfoundationforEnglishbecominganinternationallanguage.Inthemiddleofthe20s,Americaplayedachiefroleintheworldeconomyandcultures,whichadvancedEnglishdevelopmentagain”(Granddol1997:
8).AccordingtothestatisticsexaminedbyEnglishfamousscholarDavidCrystal,“Thereare57countriestakingEnglishasthefirstlanguage,thenumberis0.45billion;67countriestakeEnglishasthesecondlanguage,thenumberis0.35billion”(56).
Inthe80s’oflastcentury,allkindsofEnglishmodificationsturnedup.InternationalacademicscholarsbegantofocusonEnglishglobalizationandlocalization,especiallyinChina.Chinaturnedtoanewwayofreformingandopeningtotheoutsideworld.MostChinesepeoplearelongingforgoingtotheoutsideworld.Englishisagreathelptoknockatthedoor,becauseEnglishhasbecomeadesignedlanguagewhichnotonlypresentothersinfrontofyoubutletyoubeknown.“Itisreportedthatmorethan30papershavebeenpublishedin‘worldEnglishes’andEnglishtoday’”(LiShaohua2006:
27).ItprovesthatapaperwritteninEnglishcanbebetterpresentedinfrontofthewholeworld.TheearliestdocumentaboutEnglishlocalizationinChinawaswrittenbyKachru,“‘TheOtherTongue:
EnglishacrossCultures’,whichintroducedEnglishvarietiestoChina.TheauthoritiesineducationfieldcallonthelearnerstoperfecttheirpronunciationandgettoknowEnglish-speakingcountries’cultures.ButtheimportanceofminglingChinesecultureswithEnglishisignored”(41).OnecanonlydisplayhisEnglishtalentsinexamorotheraspectswhicharetotallyopposedtoacommunicativetoolrootedinEnglish.A.KirkpatrickdiscussesEnglishwithChinesecharacteristicsindifferentlevels.In2005,HuXiaoqingreckonedthatmanyEnglishteachersweretoleranttoEnglishwithChinesecharacteristics.MostChineseEnglishlearnersnotonlywanttoknowmoreaboutforeignculturesbutalsoEnglishwithChinesecharacteristics,becausetheywanttoletpeopleknowtheyareChinese.NiuQiangandMartinWolffaimedatthepoliciesofEnglishteachinginChina,andtheypaidmuchattentiontohowmanybenefitscanbegotforChineselearningEnglish.ItiscertainthatLanguagesandculturescannotbeseparated.ItisnottheterminalgoaltolearnEnglishandculturesbycompletelychanging.Sothetwoscholars(NiuQiangandMartinWolff)thinkthatifEnglishcanbeusedefficientlyinbothChinaandabroad,whowillblameit?
Therefore,inEnglishteaching,theteachersneedtodisseminateEnglishwithChinesecharacteristicsandexploreteachingmaterialsclosetostudents’dailylife,whichexpresswesternculturesaswellasChineseculturesandvalues,justasitisthatmanyforeignpeopleaddtheirownculturestoChinesewhilelearningChinese.AnumberofnewwordsareconstantlybroughtintoChinese,likesofa,coffee,show,coolandsoon.TheseculturesarewidelyusedinChina.Eventhegreetingstylehaschangedinto“hi”and“hello”.ThereforeEnglishshouldbechangedtoadjustChina’ssituation.
