Somehavepointedoutthattheserulesaremostlyforfemalestudents.Women’sclothesareusuallycuttobemorefittedandshorter,whilemen’sclothesarelongerandlooser.Inpractice,morewomenwillbecaughtbreakingdresscodes.TheNewYorkPostreportedthatlastyear,oneschoolinStatenIsland,NewYorkgave200dresscodedetentionsintwoweeks-90percentofwhichwenttofemalestudents.

Someschooladministratorssaytheysimplywantstudentstodressprofessionallytopreparestudentsfortheirfuturecareers.Butothershavetoldfemalestudentsthattheirclothespresenta“distraction”tomalestudents.Thatideaisbeingcriticized.

The“distraction”argumentisunfairtowomen,criticssay.Itsuggeststhatexposedskinmeansthatyouwantcriticismorsexualadvances.

“Thesedresscodesmeanthatgirlsaregettingveryclearmessagesthatmenhavearighttoyourbodyinpublicspacesandit’ssociallyacceptable,butyouwillbepunished,”LauraBates,aco-founderoftheEverydaySexismProject,aprojectthataimstopromoteequalitybetweenmenandwomen,toldTheAtlantic.

Somestudentshavetakenactiontochangethesituation.Theyhavestartedonlinecampaignsandmadeshortfilmstobuildpublicsupport.
