Asanaturaltragedy,anearthquakestrikesallofasudden,anditusuallylastsadozensecondsorso,oftenfollowedbyaftershocks.Lotsofbuildingswouldbeleveled,andalargenumberofpeoplewouldbecomevictims.Rescuesandcontributionsaretocometosurvivors,butgreatdamagesisdone.Canwedoanythingbeforeanearthquake?

Thispartshouldlastlessthan8minutes.

2.Backgroundinformation

The1976TangshanEarthquake:

thedeadliestearthquakeofthe20thcentury,amagnitude7.8earthquakehitthesleepingcityofTangshanat3:

42amonJuly28,1976.TheTangshanearthquakelastedapproximately14-16seconds.Aftertheearthquakehit,242419peopleweredeadordying;164581peopleseverelyinjured.In7218households,allmembersofthefamilywerekilledbutheearthquake.93%oftheresidentialbuildingsand78%oftheindustrialbuildingswerecompletelydestroyed.

The2008Wenchuanearthquake:

asstudentsarefamiliarwiththisearthquake,theycandiscussthesetwoearthquakesandtheirinsightsintoearthquakes.

3.Pre-readingactivities

Thestudentsarerequiredtothinkupsomeothernaturaldisasterstheyexperiencedorseen,amongwhichareflood,landslide,typhoon,hurricane,tornado,sandstorm,drought,etc.Thenthestudentsareaskedtolistentoapassageaboutwhathappenedbeforeanearthquakeandanswerthefollowingquestions.Afterfinishingit,thestudentsmoveontothetext.

Conclusion:

evenifpredictionbecomespossible,peoplestillhavetodotheirbesttopreventdisastersbyimprovingbuildingstructuresandbybeingpersonallyprepared.
