Theresearchersfoundtwospeciesofleafcutterbeesputtingplasticintotheirnests.Oneofthebeestheystudied,thealfalfaleafcutterbee,normallybitesoffpiecesofleavesandflowerswhileasecondbeegathersstickysubstancesfromtrees.Leafcutterbeesdon’tbuildbignestsorstorehoneylikehoneybees,choosinginsteadsmallnestsinundergroundholes,treeholesorcracks(裂缝)inbuildings.Buttheresearchersfoundthatthreeofeightbroodcells(育雏巢室)containedpiecesofplasticbags,replacing23percentofthecutleavesineachcellonaverage.

Whiletheydon’tmakehoney,alfalfaleafcutterbeesstillmakemoneyforU.S.andCanadianfarmersbypollinating(给……传授花粉)cropsincludingalfalfa,carrotsandmelons.TheEuropeaninsectswereintroducedtoNorthAmericainthe1930sforthatpurpose,andthey’vesincebecomewild,joiningthecontinent’smanynativespeciesofleafcutterbees.

InaseparatestudyconductedinArgentinabetween2017and2018,researchersfoundabeenestmadeentirelyofplastic,whichconsistsofthreeseparatecells.It’sthefirstknownexampleofsuchconstructionworldwide.Comparedtotheotherneststheresearchersexamined,whichweremadeofnaturalmaterials,thisonehadaprettylowersuccessrateofthebees’survival.Oneofthecellshadadeadbabybee,anotherseemedtohavehousedanadultthathasleftthenest,andthethirdwasunfinished.
