happyasaclam“happyasaclam”意为“非常开心、快乐”,这个短语源于美国,目前仍是典型的美式英语。
它的完整表达是:
Happyasaclamathightide,最早出现在19世纪初期,到了19世纪30年代,后面的athightide被省略,短语正式变为happyasaclam。
知道了完整形式,就不难理解为什么“开心(happy)”会和“蛤蜊(clam)”扯上关系了。
lowtide(低潮)使蛤蜊很容易在沙滩上现身,人们发现、挖走它的几率也就大大提高。
而hightide(高潮)可以让蛤蜊安安稳稳被水覆盖着,不用担心突然有人把它从沙滩上挖走。
所以它在hightide的时候自然是很开心的——又安全,又舒服,绝对无忧无虑。
到19世纪40年代,happyasaclam在美国基本上已经到达家喻户晓的程度。
大家讲到“特别开心”的时候,还是下意识地用happyasaclam。
